S. Carolina vs. Arkansas (-7) 9:00 ET SEC TV
A look at the league standings shows that a promising start for S. Carolina has dissolved into an 11-9 SU record overall and just 2-6 SU in SEC play. Arkansas is tied for 3rd place in the league with an overall mark of 16-5 SU, including 5-3 SU in SEC play. With some fundamental advantages and a strong home court, place your NCAA Basketball pick on Arkansas to emerge with a double digit victory tonight.
It appeared as if it would be a positive season for S. Carolina under 3rd year HC Frank Martin. Since taking over the Gamecock program, after his time at Kansas St., Martin authored a pair of 14 win seasons. A non-conference season closed with a 64-60 win against highly ranked Iowa St., lifting Carolina’s record to 9-3 SU, 7-3 ATS at the start of SEC play. Since that time, however, the bottom has fallen out for S. Carolina. In league play, the Gamecocks stand just 2-6 SU, 1-7 ATS. That lone cover came Saturday night in a 67-50 home court win over Georgia. But, before you get too excited about that victory, consider that Georgia’s top scorer and rebounder, Marcus Thornton, missed that game with a concussion. Now, Carolina must travel to face a hungry Hog team, who returns to Bud Walton Arena following a defeat at Florida.
Fourth year HC Mike Anderson has not changed his style since his days at Missouri. Anderson is still an advocate of the “40 minutes of hell defense” which pressures opponents for the full 40 minutes. This is a fundamental edge that figures to work to the Hogs’ advantage tonight. That defense forces just under 16 TOs per game. Arkansas should have great success with their transition game against a S. Carolina offense that turns over the ball nearly 14 times per game. It is part of the reason why Arkansas is averaging over 80 PPG on 46% shooting and 36% from the arc. With an average of over 17 assists per game and a +4 rebound margin, you can see why the Hogs are a successful offensive team. These numbers are even better at home, when the supportive crowd at Bud Walton Arena creates havoc for the visiting team and momentum for the home-loving Hogs. Note that Arkansas is a sterling 65-7 SU under Anderson at Walton Arena and that in Anderson’s years at both Missouri and Arkansas, his teams are 51-27 ATS as home chalk in NCAA Basketball odds.
With the fundamentals and technicals in place, expect a comfortable double digit win for Arkansas tonight.
