The nation’s top scorer comes to Los Angeles tonight when Trae Young and Oklahoma battle USC as underdogs on the NCAA basketball odds.

Considering what’s going on in the Los Angeles area, a college basketball game seems rather trivial. Still, the show must go on, in this case the Basketball Hall of Fame Classic that finds the Oklahoma Sooners in town to take on the USC Trojans at Staples Center.

Wildfires around LA caused UCLA to cancel a game against Montana earlier this week, but this contest – as well as the ranked battle between Nevada and TCU which follows – is still on the docket. ESPN2 will televise the 10:30 PM (ET) tip, and 5Dimes has the Trojans on a -1½ line with plenty of offense expected from the two teams as the 166 point total would suggest.

Trojans Look To Stop Mini 2-Game Skid

Oklahoma is the only one of the four teams in this event not to be ranked, though a win tonight and a week from now at Wichita State could change that. With so much of Norman focused on the College Football Playoffs, there’s a chance that many Sooners have yet to even notice how well their hoopsters are doing. Oklahoma is second nationally averaging 94.4 points per game, a big chunk of that coming from the country’s top scorer, Trae Young. The freshman is netting 28.7 PPG, yet still finding to time to dish out 8.7 assists per contest, third-most in the nation.

The Trojans barely hung on to a spot in the top 25 of both polls after falling at SMU this past Saturday, 72-55. Southern Cal was getting 3 points on the NCAA basketball odds in that contest, and failed to reach the 60–point plateau for the second consecutive game after losing by a similar score at home to Texas A&M a week earlier. Bennie Boatright and Chimezie Metu form a solid duo down low, but Andy Enfield’s squad has struggled to find scoring from the outside to balance the attack.

Rivalry Trends, Final Thoughts & A Free Pick

If we include all of the meetings between USC and OU, the series stands 6-5 in favor of the Sooners. Officially, it is 6-4 in Oklahoma’s favor after discounting a Trojans win the NCAA took away for one violation or another. Their most recent get-togethers came in a home-&-home scheduling in 2007 and 2008. Southern Cal won the ’07 contest in LA with Oklahoma winning the following year in Norman. Totals split at the two campus sites with the ‘over’ a winner in the contest at USC’s Galen Center.

Technically, this is a neutral-site affair, though we know the Trojans will have the crowd behind them. Neither team has been a great follow so far, so I’ll make a scoreboard play for my free college basketball pick and go with the ‘under.’
