Out of the comfy confines of Thomas & Mack and with national power Duke coming to Vegas, there will be little home advantage for the Running Rebels. Should you take the chalk on this game?

Duke (-20 to -25) vs. UNLV 5:15 ET ESPN

Marvin Menzies, the former highly successful New Mex St. coach, has come to Vegas to try and turn around the fortunes of a Running  Rebel team who, in the early ‘90s, was among the NCAAB elite under Jerry Tarkanian. Those days have long passed, as recent history has seen UNLV matriculate to the Mountain West. Though they have won 18 or more games each of the last 5 seasons, the former HC Dave Rice regime (a former player under Tark) was a largely failed experiment. Enter Menzies, who had turned New Mex St. into the premier team in the WAC, where they were 26-2 SU the previous 2 seasons. Looking for a bigger challenge and a national stage for his renowned group of international recruits, Menzies chose high-profile Vegas when the job opened. Working mostly with the retreads of the Dave Rice era, Menzies arrived in late April with just 3 scholarship players on the roster. He recruited a virtual new team in the next month. A summer trip to the Bahamas left Menzies with a positive view of his team. But, a new coach, a new system and a new team rarely turn out to be a good thing in the first season. Menzies has been a money maker for us in the role of favorite, where he is 71-46 ATS, including 4-2 ATS this season. But, the result of today’s game against a Top 5 Duke team was foreshadowed in the Rebs’ previous outing vs. Arizona St. That was a 97-70 defeat in Tempe to an Arizona St. team, who has recently lost by 33 to Purdue and 46 to Kentucky (teams who are clearly in the Blue Devils class).

Now that Duke is rounding into form with the returns of Tatum and Bolden to the roster, Coach K has the ability to name this score. If you can find out who his inner-circle is betting, you too can have a pointspread winner in this game. My best read is that in a venue as high-profile as Vegas, this margin could well exceed 30 points as a quickly emerging Duke team, who has quality as well as depth, puts on a show!  At the least, I wouldn’t bet against them.
