The Tar Heels are off to a great start, but we're not sleeping on Davidson either. Who should we go with when placing our final NCAA Basketball picks for the day?
Though both teams are undefeated, this is the Tar Heels we're talking about. They're almost always going to be heavy favorites on the College Basketball odds board, and today is no different.
At time of this writing, North Carolina was favored by 13.5 points at a lot of the sportsbooks. A total had not yet been made public.
North Carolina Tar Heels
The UNC Tar Heels have opened the season in style, but it must be said that the competition has left a lot to be desired.
UNC started off with a 76-60 win over North Carolina Central, and a couple days later the Tar Heels dominated Robert Morris in a 103-59 win.
Against the Colonials, North Carolina shot 50.7 percent from the field and got to the line 36 times (converting 27 of their free throws). They completed dominated Robert Morris on the glass and only had eight turnovers overall in the dominant win.
There were some standout individual performances from Roy Williams' team, as Brice Johnson had 23 points, eight rebounds and three assists, and Kennedy Meeks had 21 points and 12 rebounds, with Marcus Paige and Justin Jackson each scoring in double figures too and J.P. Tokoto handing out a game-high 10 assists. UNC had 29 dimes compared to Robert Morris' nine in the victory.
Through two games, the Tar Heels are ranked fifth in the country in rebounding (49 per game) and are sixth in assists (22 per contest). Will they be able to find similar offensive rhythm against a better team in Davidson this afternoon?
Like the Tar Heels, the Wildcats have had a flying start to their 2014-15 season. They've won each of their first two games by at least 35 points, but again the competition hasn't been strong whatsoever.
We last saw Davidson take the court on Tuesday in a 86-51 win over Campbell. Everything was going in for the Wildcats, as they shot 56.3 percent overall and nailed 10 threes (10-of-21).
Despite scoring 86 points, only two players scored in double figures, and that would be Jake Belford and then Jordan Barham off the bench. Belford had a career-high 20 points on 9-of-12 shooting in the win, while Barham hit all seven of his shots for 14 points in just 12 minutes for the second unit.
Davidson looks to have quite a balanced team this season, with multiple guys who are able to chip in with the scoring. The sample size is small, but they have five players averaging in double figures as they head into this clash with the giant that is North Carolina basketball.
Oskar Michelsen, Tyler Kalinoski, Jordan Barham, Jake Belford and Jack Gibbs have also been scoring at a good clip, and Nathan Ekwu and Peyton Aldridge have provided a good presence in the rebounding department. Everything's going to have to click though for Davidson to make a game of it today.
College Basketball Pick
We get that UNC is a top team, but this may be too many points this early on in the season for the Tar Heels to be laying.
Davidson has looked good to kick things off as well, and we expect them to hang around on the neutral court. The Wildcats are going to have to hit a good percentage, especially from three, if that's to happen, but they haven't had much trouble in that regard thus far.
In truth, we want to see North Carolina up against a good team before trusting them to cover huge numbers, especially when playing on a neutral court. With that in mind, we're going to roll with the Wildcats to cash as the NCAA Basketball betting underdogs today. Good luck!
