A Season to Forget

The Mississippi St. Bulldogs enter the SEC Tournament having lost their last 13-games in a row. They also went under the total in 9 of those 13-games. The Bulldogs finished last in the 14-team Southeastern Conference with a record of 3-15 despite getting off to a 3-2 start. They have just 2-players that average in double figures scoring led by sophomore guard Craig Sword at 13.7 points per contest. This is a far from explosive offensive team that averages just 54 field goal attempts per game, shoots just 29.9% from beyond the 3-point line, and is converting on a below par 66.2% of their free throw attempts on the season.

A Struggle to Score

The Vanderbilt Commodores finished the regular season by losing their last 4-games, and ending up 15-15 on the year. The Commodores finished tied for 10th in the SEC with a conference record of 7-11. By virtue of a tie breaker with Alabama, they’re seeded 11th in the conference tournament. You don’t have to look far to find out why it’s been a down year for the Commodores. There’s just no other way to sugar coat it, other than to say, they’re just a horrible offensive team. The Commodores are 314th out of 351 Division 1 teams in scoring offense averaging just 64.5 points per game. They enter tonight having scored 64-points or less in 7 of their last 8-games, and have gone under the total in all 8 of those contests, with the average combined total score in those contests at 119.0. Similar to tonight’s opponent the Commodores are a terrible 3-point shooting team converting a miserable 31.9% of their attempts, and are a horrible free throw shooting team as well succeeding on just 65.9% of their tries on the year.

Final Analysis

When these two clubs met at Vanderbilt earlier this season the game produced a paltry 104-points combined, and both teams attempted an identically low 47 field goal attempts. Neither of these teams are going to light it up from beyond the 3-point line. While Mississippi St. has shown willingness at times this season to play a faster tempo type of game, they have often let the opponent dictate the pace at which the contest is played. Vanderbilt is the furthest thing from an offensive juggernaut. However, the Commodores have been very good this season at getting opponents to play at their snail’s pace. This one has all the earmarks of a low scoring boring type affair for our college basketball picks.
