Seven years have passed since Valparaiso and Purdue collided, and the Boilermakers are favored on the NCAA basketball odds to beat the Crusaders for the 14th-straight time.

It has been a rough week for chalk and ranked teams with four of the top 10 in the latest AP poll going down in defeat. You can bet that has Matt Painter’s attention after his Purdue Boilermakers climbed to No. 21 on that list this week in advance of a rivalry matchup Wednesday night against the Valparaiso Crusaders.

Fox Sports 1 has the 6:30 PM (ET) tip in West Lafayette, and SBR’s top sports books like Purdue’s chances to remain undefeated against their rivals from 100 miles north. The Boilermakers are carrying a 14½ to 15½ burden into the first meeting between the schools in seven years, 146½-147 the current scoreboard target.

Valpo Hits The Highway For Next Three Weeks

Valparaiso’s 8-0 start is beginning to catch the attention of some AP voters, and second-year coach Matt Lottich knows what a win tonight would mean to his Crusaders who start a 6-game road trip with this matchup. A relatively simple slate has allowed Lottich to run through a dozen players for 10+ minutes a game, though we expect him to tighten up that mix which marks the first time in nine days they’ve been on the floor. One thing Valparaiso is missing is a true 3-point assassin, and that cost Crusader backers in a 72-65 win over Utah State with just 2-of-13 shooting from beyond the arc as 8 point chalk.

After taking down Arizona and Louisville in consecutive contests, the Boilermakers kept the good times rolling with a 2-0 start in Big Ten play thanks to wins at Maryland and home against Northwestern. Purdue needed a late surge to avoid being upset by the Wildcats, scoring the game’s final seven points to escape with a 74-69 decision as a 13 point favorite on the NCAA basketball odds vs. the Wildcats. The good news is the Boilermakers don’t have to travel out of Indiana for the next month with six games at Mackey Arena and another up the road in Indianapolis against Butler.

Rivalry Trends, Final Thoughts & A Free Pick

If stats mean anything, Purdue will win by just enough to cover; the Boilermakers are 13-0 in their rivalry with the Crusaders, those victories coming by an average of 16.8 points. They last met exactly seven years ago at Valparaiso, a 76-58 Purdue triumph as a 7 point favorite.

If Washington can beat the Jayhawks in Kansas City, then I’m convinced anything can happen this season. Still, my free college basketball pick will be on the double-digit chalk.
