SBR contributor Ross Benjamin provides us with a betting preview on Sunday’s college basketball game between Providence and Butler. Go inside to read why Ross’ pick is leaning towards to over.

Sunday 1/1 College Basketball Odds, Analysis, and Pick: Providence vs. Butler

#13 Butler (11-2) will host Providence (10-4) on Sunday in what will be both teams 2nd Big East Conference game. There’s an opening tip time of 3:00 PM ET, and it will be televised by the CBS Sports Channel. Providence won and covered all 3 games played against Butler a season ago. As a matter of fact, since joining the Big East Conference in 2014, Butler has lost all 3 of their home games against Providence.

The current (9:30 AM ET) college basketball betting odds at Bookmaker indicates that Butler is a 10.5-point favorite and there’s a posted total of 140.5. At the time of this writing, there’s been no movement on either the point spread or total in respect to the opening number.*

Friars Recent Funk

The Providence Friars are coming off straight up and against the spread losses in each of their previous 2 games. Those defeats included a 79-67 upset loss at Boston College as a 10.0-point favorite, and they were blown out 82-56 at #17 Xavier this past Wednesday. The Friars defensive play was especially alarming in those pair of losses. Boston College and Xavier combined to shoot a sizzling 56.4% from the field during those 2 contests. Prior to those 2 poor defensive performances, Providence had allowed a paltry 58.9 points per contest through their first 12 games of the season.

Bump in the Road for Bulldogs

Butler opened their Big East schedule with a 76-73 upset loss as an 8.0-point favorite at St. John’s this past Thursday. They fell victim to some red-hot shooting by the home underdog in that contest, evidenced by St. John’s converting on an outstanding 54% of their field goal attempts. Butler’s only other defeat this season came at Indiana State 72-71, and they were also a sizable 9.5-point favorite in that contest. On a more positive note, Butler is a perfect 7-0 at home this season, and had a substantial victory margin of 21.0 points per game.

Final Analysis and Pick

Providence enters today’s game having gone over the total in each of their previous 6 games. Conversely, Butler has gone over the total during their last 4 lined games. Furthermore, considering both team’s recent defensive struggles, I like this game to be a high scoring affair, and one of my Sunday college basketball picks coincides with that prediction.
