We all have our brackets filled out, and confidence is running high this is the year we’ll have a perfect showing in SBR’s March Madness Contest. Some of us have even gone so far as to play at least some of our picks on the spread in their Round 1 contests.

With so much focus on brackets and picking winners, either straight-up or against the spread, it’s easy to forget about totals this time of year. With that in mind, let’s come up with a couple of free NCAA basketball picks for totals involving teams from last year’s title matchup, North Carolina and Gonzaga.

No. 13 UNC-Greensboro Will Press & Harass No. 4 Gonzaga

The first meeting between the programs comes early on Day 1, the Spartans and Bulldogs tipping the Boise pod at 1:30 PM (ET). After opening -12, Gonzaga now has a hook attached to its chalk. The scoreboard mark has dropped a half since going out, and it could go lower than the current 135½ by game time.

Hate to get ahead of myself, but I do find it interesting and somewhat foreboding that Gonzaga opens against a Carolina school and could get a rematch with the big UNC in the West finals. I also find it interesting how both teams let defense lead the way in conference title tilts. The Spartans have good size down low led by James Dickey and will pester the Bulldogs bringing the ball up the court. Greensboro was sixth in the country allowing 63.3 PPG, and allowed 10 fewer per game in the three wins to earn the bid from the Southern Conference. Both teams also play on the other end of the floor, where Francis Alonso is a huge 3-point threat for the Spartans and the Bulldogs were among the top teams in the country connecting on better than 50% of their field goals. I’m going against the movement on the college basketball odds with an ‘over’ play.

No. 15 Lipscomb Draws No. 2 UNC In 1st-Ever Big Dance

Go crazy, Bisons! You’re finally going dancing and you should celebrate like there’s no tomorrow. That’s because there won’t be any tomorrow for Lipscomb after Friday’s clash in Charlotte against defending champion North Carolina. The Tar Heels are favored by 19½ with Heritage listing 161½ for the total.

It was only two years ago that we saw a No. 15 seed beat a No. 2 (MTSU over Michigan State), and I will be rooting for such a thing to happen again, which would only be the ninth time. But I just don’t see that happening. I also don’t see an ‘over’ happening here for two reasons: 1) UNC’s Roy Williams will call his dogs off with a potential matchup against Michigan on deck, and; 2) the only chance Lipscomb has is to slow the game down. Give me the ‘under.’
