Duke has dropped its first two ACC road games as big chalk, and the No. 7 Blue Devils are 18-point favorites on the NCAA basketball odds Wednesday night at Pittsburgh.

It was a rough start of the season for Duke haters as the Blue Devils came out of the chute with 11 straight wins. But things have been looking up recently with Mike Krzyzewski’s crew dropping two of their first three Atlantic Coast Conference contests, and the Blue Devils are on the road once again Wednesday at Pittsburgh against a Panthers team that owns a decent track record in the series.

Duke haters get a large bundle of points to cheer on another loss when ESPN2 airs the 7 PM (ET) tip from Petersen Events Center. With Pittsburgh the only winless team in the ACC standings, the Panthers are 18-point underdogs at most shops monitored by SBR’s college basketball odds, 154½ the target for scoreboard bettors.

Both Sides Missing Key Glass Workers

This is the third time in four conference games the Blue Devils are not in the comfy confines of Cameron Indoor Stadium, and they dropped the first two road tilts at Boston College and North Carolina State as double-digit chalk. Bookmaker closed Duke -12½ this past Saturday down in Raleigh, and the underdog Wolfpack came close to that spread themselves in the 96-85 upset. Coach K is also going to have a shorter bench tonight with both Marques Bolden (knee) and Javin DeLaurier (hamstring) out of action.

Not having those two will be at least a little easier to handle considering Pittsburgh is missing Ryan Luther. The 6-foot-9 senior has been out since mid-December with a foot injury and was a beast inside for Kevin Stallings, pulling down almost 30% of the team’s rebounds when he got hurt while also scoring close to 13 a game. Nobody has been able to fill his shoes so far.

Series Trends, Final Thoughts & A Free Pick

Wednesday’s collision is the 17th overall in the series (Duke 9-7) and marks the fifth meeting as ACC combatants. The Blue Devils have won three of the four conference clashes, the most recent coming in early February a year ago at Cameron where the 72-64 final only had enough to cover half of the -16 spread Duke was burdened with. Pitt posted a 76-62 win the last time the teams met here, the Panthers providing a payday for their backers who were only laying a point.

A couple of trends hard not to notice are that Duke is 0-3 ATS in ACC games and all three have gone ‘over.’ The Panthers are 14-5 at Petersen Events Center facing Top 10 teams, but those were much better Pitt teams than this one, even with Luther. Still, 18 points is a lot, so I’ll take the home dog for my free college basketball pick.
