Playing on the road vs. playing at home is one of the biggest factors in college hoops handicapping, or so we’re told. We look at a matchup where this advantage might leave the door open for NCAA Basketball bettors looking to pick up a dog at a solid price this evening.
NCAA Basketball odds makers are very aware of the advantage a home team has and usually adjusts the line accordingly. It seems nowadays in recent years players are more used to tough road environments though and winning a game on the road is not as monumental a task as years past, more challenging than impossible. Add in the fact that online sportsbooks are aware of every single angle and finding a good home dog is not necessarily always a solid play. Except for today...
Middle Tennessee State is a decent ball team. They are sitting at a winning record of 13-11 and 6-5 in conference. With that winning record they have quality wins on the road over… wait let me check again… nobody. The best team they have beaten this year is probably Old Dominion which they won in overtime at home. In that game ODU probably played their worst game of the year. Now let’s get to the point of my earlier home and away semantics. The Blue Raiders are 3-6 this year on the road. Except for a decent win against Akron earlier in the season, the other two wins on the road came against 7-17 South Alabama (in overtime) and 6-16 Southern Mississippi (winning by one).
Enter Rice, definitely not an elite program and they have not been overly successful at home. But they have been competitive in every game with their worst loss coming to co-lead leading Louisiana Tech by 13. Rice recently though just beat co-lead leading team in the league, Western Kentucky, at WKU. So I believe they will be coming into this contest with a lot of confidence after playing their last four on the road.
This is the first time Middle Tennessee has been to Rice in 11 years and I think we caught the odds makers in an interesting spot. At 13-11 (6-5 in league) against Rice at 7-15 (4-6 in league but much better than last year) they have to make them the favorite in this match up. But with some good angles on the home and away trend against them, and a rejuvenated Rice program (only two league wins last season compared to four so far this one) I like Rice to pull off the straight up win and cash for our NCAA Basketball picks at the underdog price.
