Our college basketball handicapper is traveling over the weekend, but that won't stop him from making his hot totals picks for us at SBR before the lines come out. Read on as he identifies a few West Coast trends worth tailing for your college basketball picks.

2016-17 NCAAB Record: 32-18-2, +12.20 Units

Pretty amazing cover with Gonzaga pulling away last night after withstanding a flurry of baskets from San Francisco in the first half. In late news on local television, I found that two members of the Gonzaga rotation were going to be sitting for this game, so I tweeted to take the Dons on the first half +13 – having already wagered Gonzaga on the full game line. That coverd and once the Bulldogs got settled into their new rotation, they pulled away easily from San Francisco and covered the full game line with ease. Make sure you are following me @mlathrop3 and all of our SBR contributors here on twitter as we often share insights closer to game time!

Let’s look at the top totals plays I am placing on Saturday, all within the West Coast Conference:

 St. Mary’s vs BYU

When you have a team that likes to press pace like BYU, when considering taking the Over on a total you want to look for clues that the opposing team is willing to run with them. That is the case here, as St. Mary’s ran away from the Cougars in the first half of their match up at the Gaels home court in Moraga. St. Mary’s scored 13 points in a just over two-minute stretch in that game, showing they have the talent to beat BYU at their own game when pressed.

Both team’s big men had huge games in the first match up as well, so cashing an Over ticket here won’t be dependent on both teams hitting shots from distance. BYU has had some massive numbers to clear in totals this year with the books realizing their frantic pace of play on the offensive end of the ball. St. Mary’s, on the other hand, has had a string of very low posted totals, leaving the books with the task of trying to set a line somewhere in the middle. With St. Mary’s willing to run with BYU that is a fool’s errand, so I’m banking on the Over as one of my Saturday college basketball picks.

Pacific vs Gonzaga

The Pacific Tigers have proven to be a pesky opponent lately, as their offense has picked up of late. They took advantage of a slow start by Gonzaga on New Year’s Eve to take a 34-29 into halftime on their home court, just to give up 52 points to Gonzaga in the second half and lose by 20. That game slipped just under the listed total of 144.

With the deep Gonzaga bench seemingly besides themselves in scoring points late in games at home, all we need for a game to go over in Spokane is the semblance of offensive fortitude for a single half by an opponent. The eventual foul trouble of the team opposing Gonzaga will do the rest. In Gonzaga’s last few second halves at home they have scored 54, 53, and 42 points, respectively. But Pacific’s performance in the first game is also a good sign that Gonzaga will try to push out to a fast start in the first half as well, all signs that the Over is the right play on this game.
