Several key rivalry matchups are on Friday’s college basketball card, and we have a free pick for the Pac-12 clash between the Oregon Ducks and Oregon State Beavers.

Let’s say you’re in a bar and looking to stump the guy next to you with a trivia question for a free drink. You might try this one: What two U.S. colleges have played each other more times than any other basketball rivalry? Then get ready for an argument.

We generally think of The Civil War more on the gridiron than the hardwood, but Oregon and Oregon State hold the record with Friday’s matchup marking the 349th meeting. That number includes about 150 matchups prior to the Ducks and Beavers being classified as ‘major schools.’ We are really only interested in tonight’s 10 (ET) tip in Corvallis, which can be seen on Fox Sports 1. SBR’s top sportsbooks are in agreement with Oregon giving up 2½, but totals vary from 142½ to 143½.

Both Sides Fall To Utes, Beat Buffs To Begin Conference Fixture

After beginning Pac-12 play with an upset loss at the hands of Utah, Oregon evened up its conference ledger with a 77-62 win and cover at home over Colorado. Freshman Troy Brown had a career-best 21 points in the victory, adding seven boards and four steals to his stat sheet in a sloppy game. Oregon still ranks 30th in scoring (82.8 ppg), but that clip has tumbled in the two league games (66.5) as Dana Altman’s team plays just its second true road game of the season.

Oregon State flipped the same two games, beginning with a win over Colorado and a loss to Utah in the follow-up on New Year’s Eve. The Beavers covered the victory but not the defeat, both games staying ‘under’ the NCAA basketball odds. The spread winner vs. the Buffaloes is the only dubya in the last five to leave Beaver backers 4-10 ATS on the season. They could be without two key members in Wayne Tinkle’s rotation tonight, Kendal Manuel missing the last two games with a groin pull and Gligorije Rakocevic is sitting the last three with a calf injury.

Series History, Final Thoughts & A Free Pick

Oregon State leads the all-time series, 186-162, and holds a 107-92 advantage since the 1949-50 campaign when both made it to the top level of collegiate sports. The Ducks have current bragging rights, however, with a 3-game win streak after sweeping both contests last season. Oregon also covered some hefty spreads in the two wins a year ago, -18½ at Gill Coliseum and -25 on its home floor in Eugene. Totals, which ranged from as low as 125½ to as high as 160, split the last four in Corvallis.

The way my free college basketball picks have been running, your guess is as good as mine. Both teams have been better fades than follows, and neither has a real trend going in the totals column. I’ll go with the Ducks based on the recent series.
