The No. 12 Oregon State Beavers are the worst team in the Pac-12. But are they the right NCAAB pick for Wednesday’s Champ Week game against the No. 5 California Golden Bears?

  Oregon State vs. California

So the No. 5 California Golden Bears want to play in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. First, they have to navigate their way through the Pac-12 Tournament. A loss to the No. 12 Oregon State Beavers in Wednesday’s opening-round matchup (5:30 p.m. ET, PAC12) could knock the Bears off the March Madness bubble. It probably won’t happen; California opened as a 14-point favorite on the NCAAB odds board before slipping to –13.5 at some locations.

That early movement gives us a hint about which team belongs in our college basketball picks. Neither California (19-11 SU, 13-17 ATS) nor Oregon State (5-26 SU, 12-17 ATS) has performed very well against the spread this year, and they ended up splitting their season series ATS, but it’ll be hard for the Bears to cover this big spread considering how slowly both teams operate on offense.

How slowly? Imagine two glaciers made entirely of molasses. Ken Pomeroy has California rated about 21.5 points better than OSU per 100 possessions, but it’ll be a minor miracle if they get in 65 possessions each on Wednesday. We’ll follow the money and “buy low” on the Beavers instead.
