Our college basketball handicapper looks to continue his winning ways and has a pair of total NCAA basketball picks in matchups where the likely winner is not in question.

We went two out of three last night as Citadel kept their pace to the max and Oklahoma State couldn’t score well as predicted. Louisville and Duke scored 78 points in the second half of their game, but Louisville’s cold start in the first half ruined any chance of getting the Over. Tonight I’ve got two 1st place – Last Place matchups with some intriguing O/U value in the NCAA basketball odds boards, even if the games may not be close.

Monmouth vs. Marist (Over 155.5)
Monmouth’s offense is crushing teams right now, as they are averaging 80.8 points per game over the season and have scored in the 90’s in their last two. Last week at Siena, they only shot 41.2% from the floor but still put up 93 points as they shot 87.1% from the free throw line. That added 27 points to their total in untimed play, while Siena added 31 made free throws to their total. Junior guard Justin Robinson, who scored 34 points against Siena, has been ridiculous of late and scored 28 points in these teams’ first matchup - sinking six 3-pointers and going a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line.

That first matchup had Marist shooting 67 shots, but only hitting on 34.3% of them, in route to scoring 72 points. That performance was well below their season average of a 42% field goal percentage, and with that game hitting exactly 155 points, any regression to the mean will be enough to take this game over the posted total. A home game should be just what Marist needs to make that happen.

Additionally, with Monmouth being 11-2 and Marist 2-11 in MAAC play, this game could get out of hand pretty easily. Marist could be playing against the bench of Monmouth, which should help keep their offensive efficiency up in garbage time. Take the Over here as Monmouth shouldn’t have trouble scoring in the mid-80’s or higher and Marist should have plenty of chances to shoot their way over the total on Tuesday night.

Wichita State vs. Drake (Under 137)
This is another first place vs. last place matchup, just like the one above, but there is no means for regression for Drake. In these two team’s last game on New Year’s Eve, Drake was held to only 37.2% shooting in a 67-47 loss that went under the posted total of 133.5. Definitely room for improvement considering Drake usually shoots 45.6%; however, with them only getting 43 shots up in that game, and Wichita State sure to set the pace again, an improvement to “average” might only get them to the mid-50’s in scoring.

Wichita State just had a 12-game winning streak broken in their last matchup against Illinois State, losing 58-53. Wichita State was cold-shooting in that game, converting from the field at a 35.2% clip, but also held Illinois State to 27.3% shooting from the field. How did Illinois State win the game shooting just over 27%? They won the battle at the free throw line, going 22-26 from the charity stripe as compared to Wichita State’s 9-15 effort there.

Look for Drake to really struggle to score in this one, as Wichita State will be motivated to bounce back after their winning streak was broken. The Shockers should be able to repeat the performance in the first game on defense, which should suppress Drake’s offense enough for the Under to be the correct NCAA basketball pick.
