The Cincinnati Bearcats have lost two of their last three games, but they’ve had great success against ranked opponents dating back to last year. Let’s take a closer look at their Big East Conference matchup against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish from a betting perspective.

Win streak on the line

Notre Dame is enjoying its longest win streak since the 2006-07 campaign, as it captured its 11th straight victory against the Seton Hall Pirates as 10-point home favorites Saturday. The Fighting Irish were able to knock down 12-of-18 shots from 3-point range in that affair, while they’ve hit 59.8 percent of all shots over their last three contests. Notre Dame is 6-11 against the spread (ATS) when playing with one or less days rest over the last two-plus campaigns.

Losing by the smallest of margins

Cincinnati has put together a solid 13-2 record to open the 2012-13 NCAA basketball season, with both losses coming by a single point, including a heartbreaking 53-52 setback to St. John’s as 13.5-point home favorites Saturday. The Bearcats are now in danger of losing three straight at Fifth Third Arena for the first time since 2007, which doesn’t fit well with their 1-5 ATS mark as a home favorite of 3.5 to 6 points over the last two-plus campaigns.

Dominating regular-season play

Sports bettors will find the Fighting Irish to be an appealing road underdog when looking over the NCAA Basketball odds page, considering they’ve compiled a 32-9 record over their last 41 Big East Conference regular-season contests. Notre Dame is a money-making 25-16 ATS versus conference rivals since 2010, with the UNDER going 20-16 in that situation.

Defending the perimeter

The Bearcats are eighth in the nation and second in the Big East in limiting opponents to 35.7 percent shooting from the field, while they’ve allowed their last two foes to shoot a combined 1 for 19 from 3-point range. Notre Dame will certainly challenge its defense, as it sits behind only four teams nationally in shooting 51.5 percent from the floor, including 40.6 from beyond the arc.

Home team has gotten the cash

The Fighting Irish will be playing their first true road game of the year, which is a difficult situation to get behind when the home team is 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings. It’s also important to note that Monday’s visitor is 0-4 SUATS when playing away from home as an underdog of 3.5 to 6 points in its last four tries.

I’m going to recommend that readers back the Bearcats as one of their NCAA basketball picks, as the Fighting Irish have failed to cover the spread in their last three Big East road openers as underdogs—two of those games being their first true road game of the year.
