Wednesday night action in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge brought out some heavy hitters with four top 25 teams from the two conferences colliding on the hardwood, including top-ranked Duke. The annual interconference battle saved the best for last, however, with a clash of top 5 clubs on Thursday in East Lansing where the Michigan State Spartans host the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

The early encounter of giants finds No. 3 Michigan State giving up 6½ points at Bookmaker, other shops carrying the Spartans at -6 against No. 5 Notre Dame. Bettors have a range of totals to ponder, from 136 to 137½.

Both Teams Coming Off Tournament Wins

Mike Brey brings the Irish into Breslin Center unscathed with a 6-0 record, and a perfect 3-0 in their lined affairs. Notre Dame capped off a Thanksgiving trip to Hawaii with a 67-66 victory over then-No. 6 Wichita State in the finals of the Maui Invitational, rallying from a 14-point halftime hole to claim the title. The Fighting Irish were small 2½ point underdogs and came out a little cold, suffering through a 7-minute stretch in the first half with just four points. Bonzie Colson continued his strong start to the campaign with his fourth double-double, pouring in 25 points and grabbing 11 boards.

Michigan State is coming off a tournament win of its own, taking down defending national champ North Carolina in the finals of one of the two PK80 brackets in Portland. The Spartans led for all but the first 90 seconds of the contest, frustrating the Tar Heels with a strong defense and earning praise from Tom Izzo for “doing the dirty work.” All three MSU games in the event stayed ‘under’ the NCAA basketball odds, and the Spartans could be without Matt McQuaid this evening, the junior guard listed as questionable with a foot injury.

Teams Went To OT In Last Get-Together

It’s the second time in three years the two schools have been matched up in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, the December 2014 tilt taking place in South Bend where the Irish and Spartans treated the crowd to an overtime affair. Notre Dame was giving up 3 in the contest that ended in a 79-78 Irish win after the squads were deadlocked 67 apiece in regulation. That was their first encounter since 1979 and Michigan State holds a slim 17-15 lead in the rivalry.

With my free college basketball picks stuck in a 4-game slide and off to a slow start, maybe the best advice I can give you is to fade away. I’m going to bite on the ‘over’ and wouldn’t mind seeing a game that goes into overtime like the last meeting.
