It's the first Final 4 of the week, as the NIT semifinals are played on Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden. Read on as our expert college basketball handicapper explains the angles he will be wagering on this evening.

Cal State Bakersfield vs Georgia Tech

Cal State Bakersfield is the first 8th seed ever to make the final 4 in the NIT, while Georgia Tech has made it as a 6 seed. Both teams are riding strong defensive trends into the NIT semifinal to be played at Madison Square Garden. Georgia Tech has opened as a small 2-point favorite.

The Yellow Jackets have been one of my favorite ATS teams this year and for good reason. In the last six weeks, Georgia Tech has picked up a stellar 9-2 ATS record while picking up their defensive effort, compiling an 8-3 Under trend over those same games. They’ve limited opponents on the year to just 39.5% shooting, including just 33% from beyond the arc. It is that last number that they will have to continue should Georgia Tech beat the upstart Roadrunners from Bakersfield.

You see, Cal State Bakersfield has made it through the NIT on an insane run of 3-point shooting well over their season averages, which sits at just 32.4% on the road this year. They hit 42.9% against Cal, 57.9% against Colorado State, and 52.6% against Texas-Arlington. Bakersfield posted 80 points against UTA with just 48 attempts! And of course, they’ve covered ATS in these games because they are playing out of their mind. My guess is that under the lights of Madison Square Garden the talent difference between the WAC and ACC will prevail, so I am taking Georgia Tech to cover the small number of -2 on Tuesday night.

Texas Christian vs Central Florida

In the second NIT semifinal of the night in Madison Square Garden, you have a team that plays defense and one that does not. I’ll take the team that prevents the other team from scoring thank you very much.

In a battle of NIT 4 seeds, TCU gets a matchup against Central Florida out of the AAC. I’ve written about Central Florida before, as they have a monolith of a presence in their front court with 7’ 6”, 300 lb. center, Tacko Fall. Fall is one of the reasons that UCF is ranked 4th in rebounding in the country, as he averages nearly a double-double per game. He also shoots 72.8% from the floor, which I guess is to be expected if you just put your hand up and can dunk the ball flat-footed.

TCU shoots pretty well at 46.5% from the floor on the season, but they also allow teams to shoot 47.3% against them on the road this year. Their leading rebounder is 6’ 7” guard, Kenrich Williams, who averages 9.4 rebounds per game. Williams picks up about twice the rebounds of their starting forward. The clear rebounding advantage that UCF has, along with TCU’s inability to slow down opposing offenses, should be enough to get them over the hump. I’m taking UCF to win this game straight up at +135 as another Tuesday night college basketball pick.
