The championship game of the Southern Conference Tournament is set for tonight. The matchup is quite a surprise, pitting the third and fifth seeds in the conference against each other. Will yet another lower seed win this game, or will a higher seed prevail?

The Catamounts can win because…

They're simply on a roll and have the look of a fearless team that’s just not going to let up. Western Carolina faced the undisputed best team in the conference, a Davidson team that just went 15-1 during the regular season and had to crawl out of a 15-point deficit to win. The Catamounts were down 10 at halftime but they scored 52 points in the second half to force overtime, not an easy thing to do against a Davidson team that has plenty of NCAA tournament experience. Western Carolina was then able to score 13 points in the overtime period to get the job done.

Of added significance is the fact that WCU has now won each of its last two Southern Conference Tournament games by two points (66-64 and 99-97). This team can win a slower-paced game and it can win a faster-paced game. The Catamounts show a lot of versatility and will be hard to knock out.

It should also be said that Wofford has not been tested in this tournament. The Terriers are the third seed in the tournament. They have played the 11th-place team (The Citadel) and the seventh-place team (Georgia Southern). Western Carolina should be far tougher, enough to surprise Wofford on the college basketball odds.

The Terriers can win because…

They have been able to win the early games of this tournament without too much stress or strain. Wofford has indeed gotten a few breaks in this tournament, since it played the No. 11 seed instead of the number six seed in the quarters. It also played the No. 7 seed in the conference instead of the No. 2 seed in the SoCon. Those are fortunate breaks but when given the opportunity to win, Wofford hasn’t messed up. The Terriers have won those two conference games by 17 and 14 points, respectively. This team has not been stretched or emotionally drained. Being able to win so efficiently should leave Wofford fresh for this game. The Terriers have not had to deal with an overtime game in yesterday’s semifinals. With there being no days off in advance of this final, the team that played a more physically and emotionally punishing se

mifinal stands to be at a disadvantage. Some conference tournaments have a day or two off before the final, but the Southern Conference just plays the final the day after the semifinals. This should really work to Wofford’s advantage.
