College basketball’s first week comes to a close with several intriguing matchups, one of which takes place out on the Left Coast where the USC Trojans host the Vanderbilt Commodores.

You’ll need a ticket into LA’s Galen Center or the Pac-12 Network to catch this interconference clash that pits a pair of squads that are each expected to earn an invite to the Big Dance next March. Southern Cal should draw something around a -6 to -7 chalk line at sports books with the scoreboard target in the high-140s.

USC’s Boatright Will Sit Again

Bryce Drew lost his top three scorers from a disappointing Vanderbilt team that won only six SEC contests last season, but he still managed to attract some excellent recruits and snare a couple of key transfers who should help the Commodores return to the NCAA Tournament. Vandy started slow in the season opener Tuesday at home against Winthrop before getting it together to post a 92-79 decision that missed the ATS cover by a bucket. All five starters scored at least 12 points, with a couple of freshmen, Darius Garland (24) and Simi Shittu (18-10).

The Trojans also struggled early on Tuesday before overpowering Robert Morris in the second half for an 83-62 triumph that covered the closing -18½ line on the NCAA basketball odds board. Senior guard Shaqquan Aaron led the way with 20 points, connecting on 3-of-4 tries from beyond the arc, and Nick Rakocevic came off the bench to tally 18 along with 16 boards. Southern Cal was without star forward Bennie Boatright, its leading returning scorer from last year’s 24-win crew that went to the NIT, and the 6-10 senior is also expected to miss this contest as he continues to rehab from a left knee injury suffered last February.

Overtime Needed When Clubs Met A Year Ago

The schools met five times from the mid-60s to the mid-70s before the series went dormant. Last year’s meeting in Nashville ended that and provided an exciting overtime outcome, USC leaving Music City with a 93-89 victory to just cover as 3½-point chalk. The 80-all deadlock at the end of regulation had already eclipsed the 143-point total as the teams combined to shoot almost 47% (23-49) from 3-point range.

The Trojans managed to get by without Boatright against Robert Morris, but I believe they’ll miss him in this game, prompting me to take Vandy and the points with my free college basketball pick.
