Free NCAAB Pick: Coppin State ATS

There isn’t anything fair about a team that is winless in 13 games taking on a team that remains unbeaten after 11 games. It still makes for interesting theatre on a short Sunday schedule, and the NCAA basketball odds will help even things out a little when the Coppin State Eagles travel to meet the Houston Cougars.
In one of their final tune-ups before the start of American Athletic Conference play, the No. 21/20 Cougars are being asked to cover a substantial spread against a Coppin State team which is nearing the end of a brutal non-conference schedule. The scoreboard target should settle around 130 points.
Eagles’ Shoddy Offense Faces Cougars’ Strong Defense
Houston is the third ranked opponent Juan Dixon’s squad has faced this season, but what really makes the Eagles’ trek to this point so tough is it will be their 11th road tilt in 14 games and they still have a stop in South Bend to play Notre Dame next week. Coppin State is coming off a Friday matchup at Louisiana-Monroe in which the Eagles led early before a 5-minute scoring drought in the first half helped the Warhawks pull ahead and eventually pull away for an 80-63 win that just had enough to stay inside a 17½-point spread. Coppin State ranks near the bottom of just about every significant offensive stat, averaging 58.2 PPG and shooting under 37%.
Kelvin Sampson saw his Cougars come out cold Thursday night against Utah State, Houston taking a 10-point deficit into the locker room in a game Bookmaker closed with a -5 spread on the Bayou City ballers. It was a different story in the second half, however, as Armoni Brooks fueled the comeback to help the Cougars to the 60-50 victory and cover. Brooks scored all 15 of his points in the final 20 minutes, and all from outside the arc. Houston has been asked to cover 22+ points four times this year, and only been successful once.
Can Coppin Crack 50-Point Plateau?
This is the first time the Eagles and Cougars have gotten together on the hardwood, and first time either has faced an opponent from their respective conferences this season. Coppin State started out cashing ‘over’ tickets in six of its first seven road games, but the last two failed to reach the totals. Two of Houston’s last three home contests have gone past the numbers.
It’s never fun to lay 30+ points, and for that reason alone, I’m taking the pitiful Eagles for my free NCAA basketball pick.
