Their football teams are big underdogs in the national semifinals, but Tuesday’s hoops tussle between Notre Dame and Oklahoma is a tight affair on the odds board. Let's check it out for your NCAAB picks.

Is the tip-off game in this year’s Jimmy V Classic a portent of things to come in the College Football Playoffs? Borrowing a catchphrase from that great prognosticator Lee Corso, “Not so fast, my friends.” After all, that would mean both the Oklahoma Sooners and Notre Dame Fighting Irish had pulled off huge gridiron upsets at the upcoming Cotton and Orange Bowls.

If that does come to be, it would mark the 12th clash between the OU and ND football programs while Tuesday night’s tussle at Madison Square Garden is the very first matchup between the basketball squads. 5Dimes has the Sooners and Fighting Irish double-digit underdogs in their CFP semifinal contests, with their hoops battle a very close affair in a near pick ‘em with the mid-140s for the scoreboard target.

Both Sides Top 50 In Scoring Defense

Oklahoma arrives in New York City off consecutive wins and covers. After beating Dayton in the third-place game of the Battle 4 Atlantis, the Sooners used a 12-1 run in the second half to bust North Texas in Norman a week ago. Jamuni McNeace claimed his first double-double (16 pts, 10 reb) of the year in the win over the Mean Green, and Miles Reynolds scored 17 off the bench for the second consecutive game. Christian James is the only Sooner to average at least 10 PPG, the senior guard scoring 19.3 per contest and connecting on better than 43% of his treys.

Notre Dame has won four straight since being upset by Radford a few weeks ago, the latest dubya coming in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge with a 76-74 squeaker vs. Illinois as 6-point chalk on the NCAAB odds board. A 6-minute scoring drought by the Illini helped the Fighting Irish break open a close affair before Mike Brey’s boys held on for the victory. T.J. Gibbs and D.J. Harvey each pumped in 19 for Notre Dame, but it was the inside play of 6-11 Juwan Durham (10 pts, 5 blk) that propelled the Irish into the winner’s circle.

Irish Playing 1st Game Away From Purcell Pavilion

Going back to last year’s NCAA and Big 12 tourneys, Oklahoma is 2-3 straight up and ATS in its last five neutral-site tilts, both wins and covers coming in this season’s Battle 4 Atlantis event. After spending its first seven games on the schedule in South Bend, Notre Dame is traveling for the next three contests with a trip to UCLA following this matchup with the Sooners and a collision with Purdue in Indianapolis a week after that. The Irish are 5-2 in their last seven neutral-site contests, but failed to cover in five of those seven games.

I’m a bit reluctant to take the Irish in their first game away from home, but will go with the South Benders anyway in my college basketball picks.
