We’re almost there. Pretty soon, football won’t mess with an NCAA basketball odds card, with Sunday’s board short and minus a truly marquee matchup as far as John Q. Public is concerned. Lost in the NFL Conference Championships is a key game between teams at the bottom of the ACC standings where the Florida State Seminoles trek north into nasty weather and sinking in the rankings in advance of their clash with the Boston College Eagles.
If nothing else, it’s a chance for sports fans to avoid the verbal diarrhea leading into the Rams-Saints game and actually watch real sports with ESPNU providing the coverage from Silvio Conte Forum in Chestnut Hill, Mass. Florida State arrives with a 1-3 mark in the conference ranks, their confidence shaken with a heartbreaker against No. 1 Duke and an upset at Pitt. Boston College has lost all four league games, and could be missing its 2nd-leading scorer.
BC’s Tabbs Questionable For Sunday
We probably should’ve seen the loss to Pittsburgh coming after the way the Seminoles fell to Duke a week ago. Leonard Hamilton’s lads got sloppy on defense, which led to too many fouls as the Panthers outscored Florida State 38-20 from the free-throw line, and never could find their mark from the outside where the Seminoles converted just two of their 22 tries outside the arc.
Things haven’t gone well for Jim Christian’s crew, either. After a 9-2 start to the season, the Eagles have dropped five in a row, an upset loss to Hartford setting the tone for the 0-4 start in ACC play. Boston College did manage to stay inside the spread Wednesday at Louisville, the 80-70 final just scraping by the +11 marker at 5Dimes. Adding injury to insult is it appears the Eagles could be without Wynston Tabbs on Sunday as the freshman deals with an ankle injury.
‘Over’ A Winner 7 Of Last 9 Collisions
All 17 previous meetings have taken place since Boston College moved to the ACC for the 2005-06 season, and the Seminoles hold an 11-6 lead in the rivalry. The schools split last year’s matchups, each earning road wins and covers with Florida State favored in each contest. In the January contest at Conte Forum, the Eagles were 3½-point underdogs and used a huge first half to post an 81-75 decision. It was Boston College’s third cover in the last four games in Chestnut Hill, and also the third ‘over’ winner in that span.
It’s difficult to have confidence in either team right now. Florida State clearly has the better talent, but until the Seminoles shake their funk, I’m fading them with my free NCAA basketball pick.
