Free NCAAB Pick: Michigan +10½Best Line Offered: at 5Dimes

What are the odds of Chris Webber tunes into ESPN’s 7:30 PM (ET) broadcast this evening from Chapel Hill where the North Carolina Tar Heels host the Michigan Wolverines? While we can’t be sure of those numbers, we are certain of the NCAA basketball odds for the matchup which have the Tar Heels giving up 10½ and the total running in the 145 to 145½ point range.

Tonight marks the first time the schools have collided since 1993 when they met in the NCAA Championship. A huge crowd at the Superdome saw a tightly-played affair that went down to the closing seconds. Underdogs by 2½, the Wolverines trailed by two when Webber signaled for a timeout Michigan didn’t have. That sent North Carolina to the free throw line and an eventual 77-71 victory. With the win, the Tar Heels took a 3-2 lead in the rivalry.

Wolverines Begin Difficult 5-Game Stretch

John Beilein and his boys spent the Thanksgiving holiday out in Hawaii taking part in the Maui Invitational. Favored by 6 at Bookmaker against LSU in the opening round, the Wolverines led by 7 in the second half only to succumb to a late Tigers rally and fall by a 77-75 count. Michigan followed up by beating Chaminade and Virginia Commonwealth in the losers bracket, covering both of those decisions. The Wolverines came home for a Sunday battle against UC Riverside, making quick work of the Highlanders in an 87-42 victory as 21 point chalk.

Tonight’s clash starts a tough 5-game stretch for the Maize & Blue, this game followed with a pair of early Big Ten battles against Indiana at home this Saturday and on the road at Ohio State next Monday. The Wolverines will also host UCLA and travel to Texas before catching a break on the fixture just prior to diving back into conference play.

Heels Home After Dropping PK80 Finals To Spartans

North Carolina didn’t travel quite as far for its holiday tournament, stopping at the Portland last week to take part in the PK80 event. Roy Williams watched his squad breeze past Portland and Arkansas in the first two games before being routed by Michigan State in the finals of their bracket. Williams called his team’s performance “about as bad an exhibition as I’ve ever seen,” laying some of the blame for the Tar Heels’ worst shooting performance ever (15-61 overall, 1-18 from 3-point range) on himself.

North Carolina had been shooting at least 47% from the field in its previous games, so we have to expect the Tar Heels to bounce back tonight. Still, the spread looks too big for me not to take the Wolverines with my free college basketball pick.
