Next season will have the usual suspects to win the national championship in college basketball, but here are a few others worthy of being in the discussion as long shots.

Virginia players can sit back and enjoy their historic season. Head coach Tony Bennett and his staff probably enjoyed their success for a bit before having to work the phones for recruiting and remind those on the fence that Duke and Kentucky might be a fast track to the NBA, but if you have the talent, Charlottesville is now a destination and you can impress scouts with your defensive prowess.

The early college basketball odds opened with Kentucky, Duke, Virginia and Michigan State at or right around 7-1 to 8-1 odds to cut down the next April. While there is still work to do on some recruits and not every transfer is settled, we take a look at the few of the longer shots that could have added value.

Villanova 14-1 odds

[/]{"component": "embedHTML", "code": "

Catch future Wildcats, @YooJustoo and @jre10_, for @usabasketball in the 22nd annual @nikehoopsummit tonight 10 PM EST on ESPN2! 🔵⚪️ pic.twitter.com/kxMPJiuDul
— Villanova MBB (@NovaMBB) April 12, 2019
\n\n"}[/]

Jay Wright's team was 26-10 after winning the national championship, but he was thrown off guard with a couple of players going against his typical recruiting methods by leaving earlier than expected. He will still have to replace Phil Booth and Eric Paschall, as much for leadership as for talent. However, Micky D's All-Americans Bryan Antoine and Jeremiah Robinson-Earl could start immediately and last year's underclassmen, lead by Saddiq Bey, will set the table for coach Wright's latest addition that could reach the Final Four.

Gonzaga 14-1 odds

It's hard to say a 33-4 and Elite 8 appearance is disappointing, but with how Gonzaga was set up, they fell short of perceived expectations that most Zags fans and sportsbooks had for them. Yes, Rui Hachimura and Brandon Clarke are almost certainly headed to the NBA, but coach Mark Few has a program that can recruit nationally and internationally. The frontcourt should be in good shape with Killian Tillie, Filip Petrusev and Corey Kispert and smooth-shooting guard Zach Norvell needs a running mate. With center Drew Timme and forward Anton Watson, if a couple of quality ball-handlers are found, the Bulldogs will be right back in the discussion as a contender.

Kansas 20-1 odds

It was a strange season in Lawrence this past year, highlighted by the Jayhawks finally not winning the Big 12 and blown out more times in one season that you would see in five or six. At present Udoka Azubuike, Devon Dotson, Ochai Agbaji and Marcus Garrett are expected back. If Quentin Grimes doesn't return, that could a decision he regrets for the rest of his life. This would be an excellent foundation for Bill Self to work with and if he were to add a couple of JC transfers, Kansas could put last year's 26-10 behind them.

Arizona 20-1 odds

Sean Miller's final words on Tucson on Senior Day did not sound like a coach who was expecting to stay put, but for now, he's still employed at Arizona. Last year's 17-15 season was a major disappointment, as all the young players looked overwhelmed and Miller did not get through to them. Adding standouts Nico Mannion, Josh Green and transfer Stone Gettings changes the team dynamics and sophomore to be guard Brandon Williams has to show more maturity and leadership. This is a fluid situation in Tucson, but one that could be exciting as last year's was awful.

Other Notables: Louisville and Oregon 20-1, Michigan 12-1 and North Carolina 14-1
