Our college basketball handicapper has started red hot! On Wednesday night he spots a very even matchup in the ACC/BIG10 Challenge, although the odds say otherwise.

Virginia Tech Hokies vs Michigan Wolverines

The ACC/BIG10 Challenge continues on Wednesday night, as the 5-1 Virginia Tech Hokies get their first true road test of the season as they travel to visit the 5-1 Michigan Wolverines. Seeing an even matchup on paper the sportsbooks have opened this game with Michigan as the standard 4.5-point home favorite almost across the board, although you can get them laying just 4 points at sites such as BookMaker. The O/U total has opened at 132 points as of Tuesday evening.

Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech has been shooting well from the floor to start the season, averaging 48.5% from the field on the year. That wasn’t so much the case in their last game, as they are coming off of a 66-53 win at Nebraska where they shot 29.6% in the first half. They were able to recover though on the strong play of Zach LeDay, who came off the bench to play 34 minutes. LeDay, a 6’ 7” senior forward, ended the game with 19 points and 9 rebounds – leading the team in both categories on the day. It wasn’t the first time either, as LeDay leads the team in points, rebounds, steals, and blocked shots per game so far this year. In the one game that LeDay was shut down this year, against Texas A&M and 6’ 9” forward DJ Hogg, the Hokies lost the game.

Michigan

Michigan comes into this matchup fresh off of a tune up game against Mt. St. Mary, which was a pedestrian 64-47 win with no line offered. The game before that was ugly though, as a week ago South Carolina spanked the Wolverines 61-46 with Michigan as the 3-point favorite on the road. Both teams came into that game undefeated. Michigan was terrible from the field, and I mean really bad. They shot just 19.2% from the field and was 2-26 from three-point range. It would be very hard for them to repeat that bad performance. The coaching staff of Michigan credited South Carolina’s size for their bad shooting, but I don’t completely buy it as they are 229th in the country in scoring on the season.

 Betting Analysis

It looks like Virginia Tech can match up with the size of Michigan in this game, so this game could come down to who can shoot contested shots better. With a huge advantage in shooting percentage so far this year I trust Virginia Tech to do that better than Michigan at this point. Virginia Tech has also played slightly higher-ranked competition this year as well. I like the Hokies to keep this game very close if not outright win. For my NCAA basketball pick, I’m taking  Virginia Tech +4.5 points on Wednesday as my perfect NCAAB start continues.
