The Gonzaga Bulldogs collide with the Seton Hall Pirates for the 1st Round NCAA meet.  The Zags enter this game as a favorite, but click inside for my full NCAA Tournament pick & breakdown.

Gonzaga vs. Seton Hall
The Gonzaga Bulldogs collide with the Seton Hall Pirates at the altitude of Denver in this 9:55 ET 1st Round NCAA meet.  This battle of East vs. West heavy hitters will be televised on TRU TV.  As a result of their recent success, the Zags enter this game as a favorite.

Do the words “gap dog” ring a bell?  It’s the concept of playing a post-season underdog, who is the better seed by 2 or more rungs.  Such is the case today with the Pirates of Seton Hall (the No. 6 seed) against the No. 11 seeded, Gonzaga Bulldogs.  Often, as is the case today, it is PERCEPTION/REALITY which drives the play.

For after a serious run the entire millennium to the NCAA Tournament, no longer is “mid-major” Gonzaga considered to be the “underdog.”  For all the success that the Zags have had under 17th year HC Few, they have now warranted the favorite role (even as the worse seeded team).  There is an offsetting perception that the Zags are in a downer of a year, based on some serious personnel losses.

Last year’s guards, Pangos and Bell, were seriously missed to start the season.  The early season back injury to big man, Karnowski, dealt them yet another serious blow.  But, as the year has worn on, the Zags’ new guards, McClellan and Perkins, have become able contributors and the Zags have adjusted for the loss of Karnowski.

Betting Analysis
Today, however, they face a momentum driven Seton Hall team, who is playing their best ball of the year.  The Pirates enter on a run of 4-0 SU ATS, including a 3-game sweep to Big East CCT superiority with wins over Creighton, followed by outright upsets of the two best teams in the league, Xavier and Villanova.  Led by a pair of superior guards in Whitehead and Carrington, this is a team with upside to come.   If they can, as the line suggests, continue in that underdog mentality, they are indeed capable of winning this day.  But, there is plenty to be said for a Gonzaga team who, after being written off at mid-season, enters this Tourney on a 12-2 SU, 10-2 ATS run with victories over the 2 best teams in their own league, BYU and St. Mary’s to guarantee their inclusion in this field.
