Saint John's Red Storm hosts the Fordham Rams, a small school less than 10 miles away. Expert handicapper Joe Gavazzi picks apart the first game of today's short slate and provides his insight.

Fordham vs St. Johns (-5) 6:30 ET

Last year, the Red Storm went to Rose Hill and emerged with a 73-57 defeat as 6 point home dog.  It was a stunning blow for a Big East team at the hands of their Cross Boro, in-city, A-10 rival.

Neither of these teams is reminiscent of their star-studded history.  Like the times, some 40 years ago, when Digger Phelps was coaching Fordham or in St. Johns heyday of the 80’s and early 90’s when Little Louie Carnesseca roamed the sidelines of the Big East and had legendary battles with his behemoth rival John Thompson of Georgetown.  In recent seasons, each of these programs has languished in mediocrity in the lower echelons of their conference.

Fordham is now in the 2nd year under Jeff Neubauer, the ex-Eastern Kentucky coach.  Neubauer lifted the Rams to a 17-14 SU winning season last year, including 8-10 SU in the A-10.  That’s a major move upward from their cellar dweller status.  This year, however, the Rams lose their Top 2 scorers and also lost Jon Severe, a huge recruit, who decided to transfer to Iona.  This year, the Rams have begun 5-4 SU, included in those defeats, however, have been each time they have taken to the road with losses of 37 at ETSU as 7 point dog and 64-52 as 6 point dog at Harvard.  That would seem to bode poorly when traveling to the home of an avenging Big East rival.

St. Johns is undergoing a metamorphosis as well under 2nd year HC Chris Mullen, the former St. Johns’ star. After a 7-3 SU start last year, the Red Storm would win just one more game the entire season.  Tonight, their fortunes will be compromised by the loss of red-shirt freshman guard, Marcus LoVett, their leader at the point who is averaging 19 PPG.  It’s a major reason why this line has dropped 2+ points from the opening impost.   Last Friday, the Red Storm obeyed my command with a 20 point road victory at Tulane.  But, I watched in amazement on Monday night when the Johnnies could eclipse a weak Cal-Northridge team just 76-70 as 12 point chalk.

Even without LoVett in the lineup, I expect a sterling bounce back performance by St. Johns at a value price on a home court, where they have won 3 of 4 contests by more than this number.  Sprinkle in a bit of revenge in this Boro rivalry and you have a pointspread winner.  I invite you to put the NCAA Basketball ODDS in your favor and join me in my NCAA Basketball PICK on St. Johns this evening.
