Canisius Golden Griffins vs Monmouth Hawks

On Thursday night, Monmouth opened their league season with a win at Quinnipiac (91-72) as 9 point road chalk. Prior to this writing, Canisius will play their opening league game Friday night as 4 point road dog at Manhattan.

With the retirement of veteran HC Jim Baron last May, there was a void in the leadership role for the Golden Griffins. Baron had done a solid job leading the Griffs to 53 victories in the previous 3 seasons. Enter Reggie Witherspoon, who was all too happy to return to an area he thinks of as home. Witherspoon was a long-time coach at Buffalo for nearly 15 years, winning nearly 200 games, before getting canned in 2013. He spent the previous 2 seasons as an Asst. Coach at Alabama and Chattanooga. Returning to an area which is undergoing a major economic overhaul, Witherspoon sees plenty of positives at Canisius. Witherspoon understands the plight of the Griffs in ascending to the top of the MAAC. But, he has the talent to work with a trio of upperclassmen and a pair of freshmen guards. It has been most impressive in the early going that, entering Friday night’s game at Manhattan, his Griffs have gone 4-0 SU ATS away with coverage of 24 points and ATS wins at Kentucky and Cleveland St. before outright victories at Duquesne and Youngstown St. In attempting to beat Monmouth, however, his Golden Griffins may be biting off more than they can chew.

We all remember Monmouth as the Little Engine That Could from last season. In the 5th year under King Rice, the Hawks soared to a record of 28-8 SU, including 17-3 in the MAAC (good for 1stplace). Though snubbed by the NCAA, it was not because of a weak non-con schedule. In last year’s preseason, the Hawks defeated UCLA, Notre Dame and USC. It was their CCT Championship game loss to Iona that relegated them to the NIT, where they lost to George Washington. With 4 RS back for more, they are led by a dynamic perimeter trio of Robinson, Seaborne and Hornby. They will have a huge advantage against the youth of Canisius on the perimeter. Already this season, they have played tough road games at S. Carolina, where they lost by only 1 and at Syracuse. Each of those are Top 15 defensive teams. The romp over Quinnipiac Thursday night shows they are ready for league play and the loss to Canisius last December will have them on high alert. With Witherspoon just 14-28 ATS as a double-digit dog in his coaching career and the Hawks having a huge edge on the perimeter, it is a short leap to lay the points on the No. 1 team in the MAAC.
