We’re looking at a very low key slate of NCAA Basketball games for Wednesday with a lot of smaller school matchups , but nevertheless there’s still money to be made with our NCAAB picks of the day.

Valparaiso (2-0) at Illinois (2-0)

Even though the Crusaders are an 11.5 point NCAAB betting underdog, this is possibly the biggest matchup of the day between two highly regarded teams over the last few decades. The Fighting Illini come into this game as the better team and at home, but Valpo is not to be underestimated after coming off of a 113-50 victory over the North Park Vikings. Now, the real test comes for the Crusaders as they enter State Farm Center.

New Look Illini

Illinois is without their two top scorers of last season and also 5 of their 8 top scorers of last season. That didn’t stop the Illinois from putting a 86-62 beating on the Jacksonville State Gamecocks on Sunday. Senior guard Joseph Bertrand is key in providing the Fighting Illini with experience and came up big against the Gamecocks with 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead the way. Junior guard Tracy Abrams, the other leader of this team, contributed with a respectable 13 points in just 25 minutes. This was a non-competitive game, but as the level of opposition gets tougher, Illinois center Nnanna Egu will need to make his presence felt on the inside.

Size Is a Factor

Illinois isn’t a large team in stature and it showed in their victory against Jacksonville State as they were rebounded 44-37. The biggest concern coming into the game against Valparaiso is the disadvantage in size.

Valpo is a team that goes 11 men deep keeping everyone fresh with frequent substitutions. Lavonte Dority and Jordan Coleman are the Crusaders’ biggest scoring threats, but the biggest task for Illinois is dealing with the size of forwards Bobby Capobianco, Vashil Fernandez (7.5 rpg.), and 7 foot center Moussa Gueye out of Senegal.

Illinois is the far superior basketball team, but Valparaiso’s depth could have a big effect on the level of competitiveness in this game.

Valpo is playing with confidence and will keep this game relatively close.

Western Carolina (2-0) at Oregon (2-0)

Transfers Stepping Up

Oregon is a team coming off of huge 82-75 victory over the Georgetown Hoyas at Camp Humphreys U.S. Army Base in Seoul , South Korea. In this game, transfers Joseph Young and Jason Calliste went a combined 23 for 23 from the free throw line and managed to score a combined 40 points while transfer Mike Moser chipped in with 15 points, 7 rebounds, 6 steals, and 3 assists. In all, the 3 transfers accounted for 55 of Oregon’s 82 points while Georgetown shot itself in the foot, shooting just 1 for 15 from beyond the arc.

This type of performance couldn’t come at a better time for the Ducks as Dominic Artis and Ben Carter are each suspended for the first 9 games of the season for selling team apparel. Now, the group of transfers face an much inferior team in Western Carolina and the question is as a 17 point betting favorite at home, was the win over Georgetown a fluke or is this team for real?

Guards James Sinclair (15 points, 4.5 assists, 4.5 steals) and Tom Tankelewicz (14.5 points) look to lead a West Carolina team that’s in turmoil. The Catamounts came out on the winning end of their first two games of the season , but this is a team that’s not playing at full capacity without its leading scorer, Trey Sumler. Sumler is dealing with assault and battery charges and let’s remember, this was a team that was 14-19 last season. A challenge in Oregon is a huge step up and look for the Ducks to dominate for out NCAA basketball picks here.
