Gonzaga has been priced as the betting odds favorite to win the tournament, at about -120, and the next three teams are all evenly spaced apart, with BYU around 5-2, St Mary’s at about 9-2, and San Francisco at about 13/2.
But even 7th-seeded Portland, currently priced at about 25-1, can make a legitimate claim to being a contender, as the Pilots got outright wins in the regular season over each of the top two choices, Gonzaga and BYU.
This should also contribute to lots of opportunities with individual game spreads. San Francisco and Portland are the two hottest teams ATS-wise heading into the tournament, and Portland was in fact the best team in the entire conference during the regular season as far as ATS results are concerned, finishing with an ATS record of 20-9-1.
Portland will be matched up against Loyola Marymount in the opening round, and LMU has been the polar opposite of Portland this year, a bad bet overall and closing out the regular season on an awful run against the NCAA Basketball odds .
After LMU, Portland will face BYU, a very good team overall, but also one with some issues on defense, and in general not a great team to bet on when they are away from their home court, where they usually enjoy a big edge.
San Francisco might also be a good bet in their first tournament game against San Diego. San Diego finished the regular season losing 6 of their last 8 ATS, although, underscoring just how wide-open the WCC is, mixed in with those 8 games was an outright win over top seed Gonzaga just two weeks ago.
