Two 3-0 teams take the stage in Maui when St. John's Red Storm take on the Vanderbilt Commodores. NCAA Basketball Odds makers have made Vanderbilt a solid double digit favorite and for good reason.

NCAA odds
NCAA odds makers have come out making Vandy a -13.5 favorite, and I am good with that number. For my NCAA play of the day, I will lay the big points and back the Commodores, whom I expect to win this game by close to 20. You can grab them at regular NCAA Basketball odds of -13.5 at -110 at BetOnline.

St. John's Red Storm
The Red Storm come in averaging 67.3 points per game, shooting 42.2% from the field, and 38.1% from beyond the arc. I was a bit surprised they let go of Steve Lavin and even more surprised they went with Mullen. He will have his work cut for him because they lost about 95% of their scoring from last year. So far, they are being led by freshmen Federico Mussini from Italy and Ron Mvouika, a transfer from Missouri State. They are not very deep and will rely a lot on their new core of players.

Defensively, they are allowing 56.3 points per game, 33.2% shooting from the field, and 32.8% shooting from beyond the arc. Coach Mullen has stressed with this team the importance of defense and so far they seem to be buying in with these solid defensive numbers. Still, I don't put a ton of weight on these numbers, just as they have not really played anyone, with their best win being a 16 point comeback versus, arguably, the worst team in the Big Ten, Rutgers, a game they won by two.

Vanderbilt Commodores
Vandy is averaging 85.7 points per game, shooting 48.4% from the field, and 40% from beyond the arc. Head coach Kevin Stallings should be pretty excited about this group he has coming back, and so far they have been sharing the ball and lighting up the scoreboard. They have five guys averaging double figures so far, led by sophomore guard Wade Baldwin, and senior center Damian Jones. They have a strong group of shooters and have a chance to contend with Kentucky in the SEC.

Defensively, they are allowing 58.3 points per game, 36.1% from the field, and 22.6% from beyond the arc. Like St. John's, they have not played any upper tiered teams yet, and recently had a tough battle with Stony Brook in which they won 79-72 in overtime no less. That was actually a decent win though because the Seawolves are one of the best mid major teams in the country that returned all five starters and are picked to win the American East league.

Although both teams carry big names and big conferences, only one of these teams is going to make some noise this year. The Commodores should take care of business and be really focused in knowing they can't take any team for granted after their last tough win at home. For one of your NCAA Basketball picks, I recommend backing Vanderbilt to come into Maui prepared to handle St. John's and win this game by close to 20 and covering the low double digit number.
