Vanderbilt vs. Stanford (-3) 9:00 ET ESPN
The Vanderbilt Commodores fly to the West Coast yet again to face the Stanford Cardinal in a 9:00 pm ET tip on ESPN.  It is a battle of SEC vs. PAC12, a pair of big name conferences, who lack respect on the hardwood.  These teams enter with identical 21-13 SU records for the year.  How they got to this Quarter Final matchup, however, is in very diverse ways. Along with the respective home/road records of these two, it is the key to this selection.

In the 16th year under veteran HC Kevin Stallings, Vandy played to form with a 9-9 SU SEC regular season record, after being picked to finish 8th overall in the league. A CCT loss to Tennessee set up this NIT appearance with a No. 5 seed. Regrettably for the young Commodores, this set up a poor scheduling situation.  Last Wednesday, they were asked to travel to St. Mary’s, where they survived the road test with a (75-64) victory.  After getting the best of it on a 2 day turnaround, they prevailed against S. Dakota St. with a (92-77) home court victory.  Now, however, they are asked to return to the West Coast in what has been the most difficult traveling scenario for any of the remaining NIT teams. On their behalf, it is notable that they enter this game playing their best ball of the season.  A 7-game losing streak in January dropped them to 11-10 SU, 9-9 ATS. But since the calendar flipped to February, the Commodores have gone 10-3 SU ATS, which is something you should think about when looking at the NCAA Basketball odds. The 83.5 PPG they have scored in this event is impressive. Tonight, however, along with a negative scheduling scenario, they face their toughest defensive opponent of the Tournament.

While Vandy has been traversing the width of the U.S. (twice in 6 days), Stanford has stayed comfortably at home in Palo Alto. Tonight, under 7th year HC Johnny Dawkins, they line up for their 3rd consecutive home court appearance in this event.  The previous two have been solid victories by counts of 77-64 over Cal Davis and 74-65 against Rhode Island.  The Cardinal will certainly feel at home at Maples Pavilion, where they have gone 56-15 SU L4Y, including 15-3 SU this season.  Each of those three losses came against Arizona and UCLA, a pair of Sweet 16 NCAA participants and Oregon who made it to the Round of 32. It would not appear that a Vandy team, who has won just 6 total games away from Nashville, is in the class of any of those 3 opponents.

Must favor the PAC 12 home team with my NCAA Basketball picks on this one! Look for the Cardinal to soar on the basis of their superior defense, the home/road dichotomy and the difficult travel scenario facing a young, though talented, Vandy team.
