Villanova vs. St. John’s
St. John’s will host #6 Villanova on Sunday in a Big East Conference battle. The opening tip at Carnesecca Arena in Queens, New York is slated for Noon ET. The game will be televised nationally by Fox. The current (1/30) NCAA basketball odds board posted at Heritage indicates that Villanova is a 19.0 point favorite. This will be the first meeting of the season between these long time rivals. They met twice a season ago, and Villanova won both contests by lopsided margins of 105-68 and 90-72.

Time For Another Win Streak
Villanova had their string of nine consecutive wins ended in an overtime loss at home to #10 ranked Providence in its previous game. The loss dropped the Wildcats overall season record to 17-3, and they’re now 7-1 in Big East action. The only other defeats came at the hands of #1 Oklahoma and #11 Virginia. Villanova is #7 nationally in scoring defense allowing a mere 61.6 points per game, and #14 in field goal percentage defense holding opponents to 38.4% shooting. They’re also 17th nationally in free throw shooting at 75.3%. In the nutshell, If Villanova has a late lead, they’re an extremely tough time make a comeback against.

Red Storm Hits Rock Bottom
St. John’s enters Sunday’s game having lost 11 in a row. Their last win came way back on December 13th in an upset of Syracuse at Madison Square Garden. Putting this futile stretch into perspective, the first two defeats of this current losing streak came to Incarnate Word by 22 points and New Jersey Tech by 11. Making matters even worse, both of those losses came at Carnesecca Arena. It doesn’t get much more humiliating than that for a basketball program with such a rich history. St. John’s has shot a horrible 36.1% from the field in its last five games. During that exact time frame, the Red Storm allowed their opponents to average 81.8 points per game, shoot 48.3%, and convert 39.1% of its three point attempts. That combination of offensive and defensive numbers is hardly conducive to a winning formula.

Final Take & Pick
The only team that can prevent Villanova from winning this contest by a significantly one sided margin is Villanova themselves. The worst thing that occurred for St. John’s pertaining to this contest was Villanova losing its previous game. The Wildcats will be in a foul mood with no pun intended. I’m not fond of laying points on the road to start with, let alone a number of this magnitude. However, there are always exceptions in sports betting, and the road chalk will be one of my NCAA basketball picks on Sunday.
