The Jaguars are feeling very good about themselves. They just won on the road at Wyoming and have won two of their last three road games. The Jaguars are 7-2 overall on the season and have played with the kind of consistency which often eludes teams this early in the season. What has to make Southern especially happy is that it was able to win with defense against Wyoming, holding the Cowboys under 60 points. Defense is something which depends on energy and effort. It is a lot easier to play with energy at home in front of a supportive crowd, but when going on the road, it can be a lot harder to play with that same passion and determination. Being able to play strong defense on the road shows how well-drilled this team is right now. That’s a very important step as the season goes along. It’s something Southern can really hang its hat on in this game and the coming weeks.
Memphis has not played that much over the past week and a half. The Tigers’ only game since Dec. 5 was on Saturday, Dec. 12. Memphis easily beat Manhattan and looked like a team that had a week off. This is a very typical game coming up for the Tigers. In the middle of December, teams and schools are going through final examinations, so the bigger schools don’t want to schedule games against other really established programs such as Ohio State or Kentucky. Memphis played Ohio State in late November, before final exams arrived. The Tigers are trying to develop the kind of momentum which can carry them through the rest of the regular season and at least prepare them for the American Athletic Conference in early January.
South is playing its sixth true road game of the season, having played five previous games and going 3-2 in those games. Memphis is playing its eighth home game of the season. It is 5-2 in the previous seven, having lost to Oklahoma in the middle of November but then losing a much more disappointing game to Texas-Arlington on November 23. Memphis needs to watch out and be vigilant that it won’t be knocked off at home again by an upstart team.
Southern does not have any injuries listed at this time.
Memphis guard Raquan Mitchell has left the team, but the Tigers do not have injuries to any other players at the moment.
What’s The Pick?
Memphis seems to be cleaning up its game – not to the point of being ready for the NCAA tournament, but certainly in terms of being able to play and beat a lower-division NCAA opponent such as Southern. That’s why they’re a huge favorite on the NCAA Basketball odds. The Jaguars are going to face an overwhelmingly difficult task on Tuesday night, as they head on the road to play a team which should be very well rested.
