There is no team in college basketball, head and shoulders above the rest. See how this week's poll shakes out and who we should back on the NCAAB odds boards.
Duke goes down once again, Michigan new #1
Well, our direct quote in last week's Top 25 break down if Dukes #1 ranking was deserving was “absolutely not” and it proved true as the Miami Hurricanes put a beat down on the Blue Devils to give them their second loss of the season. As long as Ryan Kelly continues to be hurt for Duke, you can expect them to add a couple more losses to their record because they just get absolutely dominated on the boards without him on the floor.
So now the question is: does Michigan deserve the #1 spot? If you read last week’s article, we made a very good case for the Kansas Jayhawks and they backed that it up going into Kansas State with a dominant performance that was never really in doubt -even though the scoreboard may suggest otherwise. They then backed that up with two straight victories: one against a very solid up and up coming Oklahoma squad, drubbing them 67-54, followed by another road victory at West Virginia.
The Jayhawks now have 5 road victories on the season and are the most well rounded team from top to bottom in all of basketball.
The issue I have with Michigan is:they have not fully been tested outside off Ann Arbor. They have had four true road games. Two came against very weak teams in Bradley and Northwestern. When they faced their first true road test against Ohio State, they came up short, losing 53-56. Then at Minnesota, they built a 20 point lead and looked like they were going to cruise to an easy victory but the Gophers made a furious run to cut the lead to 3 points, but in the end the Wolverines were able to just barely get away with the win. The point being, this team is very vulnerable on the road. Yes they did just beat Illinois, but they are in a transitional period right now, so let's throw that out. They have huge tests coming up at Indiana an at Wisconsin. We could see a changing in the guard at the #1 spot again very, very soon.
Florida quietly handling their business
This team is ranked right now at #4 in the USA Today Coaches Poll, but even more important NCAAB Guru Ken Pomeroy, has the Gators ranked as the #1 team in the country and I can absolutely see why. To me they are everything I have said about Kansas, but they are lead by veterans and are a much more physical team. The Gators have been just destroying teams lately, downing Georgia 77-44, LSU 74-52, Texas A&M 68-47, Missouri 83-52, Georgia (again) 64-47 and Mississippi State 82-47. Those are complete blow outs night in and night out. I know one thing, when March rolls around I will be picking this Gators squad to go to the Final Four and possibly the National Championship.
Falls from Grace
VCU were ranked as high 16 in some polls but are now not even in the Top 25 after suffering back to back losses to Richmond and La Salle. I'm sure Shaka Smart has a few tricks up his sleeve and will have his team turned around in no time.
Our fingers are going to fall off if we write anymore about NC State. I'm done giving this team any type of praise, because every time I do, they make me look like a fool. State is ranked 19th in the Nation with a record of 16-4, but expect them to drop out of the polls this week after suffering brutal losses to Virginia and Wake Forest.
After being ranked inside the Top 10 earlier in the season, Cincinnati completely fell out of the rankings. Then, they were finally put back in Top 25 last week at #23. That could all be taken away once again as they just lost a very hard fought game to Syracuse by a score of 55-57. They will now take on a very tough Rutgers team tonight and you can be sure that if they lose this game they will be out of the rankings for good.
That is all for this week's Top 25 update. As always good luck with your bets and cash those college basketball betting tickets!
