After finishing out 2013 with a 2-0 day on the final day of the year, we look to keep the ball rolling and start the New Year off right with 2 winning picks in this installment of NCAA Basketball Picks of the Day.

Make sure to check out our NCAA Basketball Picks for Wisconsin vs. Northwestern

Manhattan (9-2) vs. St. Peter’s (4-7)

Mismatch in the MAAC

Usually, the record is irrelevant and the odds makers favor the home team in the MAAC and Ivy League. I was hoping for a tighter spread and didn’t get it as Manhattan is an 8 point betting favorite on the road. The reason for this is that St. Peter’s is just that bad. That said, with a surprising overtime victory over Seton Hall and victory over Cornell in their last 3 games,  St.Peter’s is strutting like the “Peacocks” that they are. Odds makers could be enticing you into taking the Peacocks with such high college basketball odds at home.

You look up and down Manhattan’s schedule and recognize that they’re beating teams that they should beat. Their schedule is a cakewalk. Just the same, the Jaspers have won 6 games in a row and appear to be the dominant team in the MAAC Conference. A major reason for the Jasper’s success has been senior George Beamen. At 6 foot 4, Beamen is a player that can play either the guard or forward position and is the go to guy on this ball club.

Beamen is averaging 21.3 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. In a tight situation, the Jaspers put the ball in Beamen’s hands as he’s fairly automatic (89.6%) from the free throw line. Look for Beamen to be a key factor in this game as the Peacocks will have no answer for him on the defensive end.

The Peacocks, who are still looking for their first conference win of the season, will be looking in the direction of junior, Marvin Dominique. Dominique has been simply dominant thus far, averaging 18.8 points and 10.2 rebounds per game. In his last 4 games, Dominique has had games of 13, 14, and 16 rebounds in a game. While St. Peter’s offense is below average, Dominique is a standout offensive player that can also play defense. He can be a difference maker.

I’m going to side with the Peacocks in this game for my college basketball picks. A win over Seton Hall shows that they have the ability to beat a good team and they’ll be at home and getting a sufficient amount of points.

#10 Oregon (12-0) vs. Utah (11-1)

Matchup of the Day

Both of these teams will be running and gunning all night as they possess two of the most potent offenses in college basketball. Oregon is the top ranked offense in the nation at 90.8 points and 51.3% from the field while the Utes are not far behind at 87.4 points and 54.2% from the field. Odds makers have thankfully provided a total for this game at 151. This appears a bit low for two teams that can shoot the lights out of the building.

Revenge Factor

Oregon will looking to avenge a loss last year to the Utes as they possess 6 players that score 9 points or more per ball game, led by sharpshooter, Joseph Young. Young is averaging a healthy 20.2 points per ball game and is shooting 54.8% from the field and 46.7% from beyond the arc. If this transfer was on any other team, he’d average 25 plus points per game, but on a team filled with talented players, everyone needs a touch.

Oregon is averaging 98 points per game in their last 2 games and Young is responsible for 24.5 points per game in that period of time. He also has the ability to pass the ball and play above average defense. We could see a monster game out of the junior.

Utah’s opponents have been quite weak lately, but that hasn’t stopped leading scorer, Jordan Loveridge from being a major factor for success. Loveridge only saw 24 minutes in the Utes last game as they dominated St.Katherine, 124-51. Loveridge is a superb rebounder and respectable scorer at 17.3 points per game. He might not see many 2nd opportunities or loose balls as these two teams can score at will.

Utah will be looking for guard Delon Wright on a regular basis. Wright plays much bigger than his 6 foot 5 frame. He’s coming off of a 17 rebound performance against St. Katherine and shoots 70.7 % from the field on the season.

Look for a massive amount of points from 2 teams that never saw a shot that they didn’t like.
