Swinger peruses the college basketball odds to give you the best chance at cashing in your NCAA Basketball picks on Sunday.

NCAA Basketball Picks for Oregon State vs. Arizona

Michigan State vs. Wisconsin

First off, let me just say that playing the premier made-for-TV game of the day can be dangerous to your bankroll.  With all the games out there, the average gambling Joe tends to cater to his desire to be entertained rather than do what’s best for his bankroll. Such is the case with this game but I know on a lazy Sunday with a limited amount of college hoops on the tube (compared to Saturday), many of you will be seduced into betting this game so I might as well add my two cents.

MSU defeated Whisky in both meetings last year earning a 49-47 victory in Wisconsin as five-point pups in college basketball odds and then dropped the proverbial hammer when they met two months later at Michigan State in a 58-43 thrashing. But this is a new year and a new group of young men. Keith Appling is doubtful for MSU after he missed the first game of his career in the team’s 15-point win over Penn State with a wrist injury. On the opposite side of the court, Wisconsin got back on track with a big win over Illinois after dropping five of their last six (all blown covers too by the way).

The public will eat up MSU with a big golden spoon as they travel to Whisky as three-point pups but we will side with the underachieving Badgers and cash a ticket.

Manhattan vs. Niagara

Let me just get this right out of the way. These are two colleges with hideous nicknames - the Jaspers vs. the Purple Eagles? Seriously, what the hell is a Jasper and has anyone seen a purple eagle? Okay, I Googled it so you don’t have to. The Jasper in question is named after a Brother Jasper who brought baseball to Manhattan College and is the originator of the seventh-inning stretch. A purple eagle, well that was borne out of someone’s acid trip in the late 60’s. But I digress.

Niagara just dropped a heartbreaker to Iona where they lost 90-89 in what turned out to be a veritable track meet.  It was a tough loss for the Purple Eagles but an easy cover for their backers in college basketball odds where the oddsmakers gave Niagara a nine-point advantage. That was only two nights ago and now they have to get up for another conference power in Manhattan.

Meanwhile the Jaspers are reveling in their victory over the Golden Griffins (the Golden freakin’ Griffins, are you kidding me?) as they dominated in what should have been a much closer contest between two MAAC powers.  Manhattan dribbled out of Canisius with an 84-73 win (and the easy cover as 2 ½ point road dogs in NCAAM odds) and claimed the top spot in the MAAC.

You can look at that big victory by Manhattan in one of two ways. Either they will be amped up to destroy a considerably less talented team like Niagara or this will be the proverbial trap game as they overlook the home dogs in this one. I say Manhattan will be up to the task and Niagara will be out of steam after dueling long and hard on Friday night only to come up empty against Iona. In addition, Niagara’s biggest offensive threat Antoine Mason has seen his 26 PPG average slip 10 points over the last three games.

Total – Clemson vs. Syracuse

I have a definite lean on the underdog in this game particularly because the oddsmakers are giving punters a generous 14-point head start on the Tigers but I’m not going to take a bite at what could be a poison apple. The game could very well get out of hand late with Clemson ineptly launching wildly from beyond the arc only to see the Orange grab the rebound and hold on and get fouled as the clock ticks down.

Therefore, I am turning my lonely eyes to the total in this game. Clemson has held their opponents to 37% shooting while they have averaged only 41% from the field. Syracuse will no doubt bring some serious defense to the fore and challenge each and every shot that Clemson takes. My primary reservation about playing Under in college basketball odds is the fact that the Orange have averaged north of 71 points per game. However, I won’t be deterred and will play Under despite the unusually low total of 114 ½ for my college basketball picks.
