As the new season comes into play, there's just 3 games involving top 25 teams, but it's certainly enough as the elite teams square off against the early season "cupcakes" and there's profit to be made with your NCAA Basketball picks. Let's take a look a tonight's action.

The Citadel (0-0) vs. #24 Butler Bulldogs (0-0)

Blowout City?
Hinkle Stadium hosts a mismatch of two teams in which Butler is a 29.5-point betting favorite on the NCAA Basketball odds board over The Citadel. There are some elite teams that purposely square off against other elite teams early in the season on their schedule as a win will look mighty good on their resume and then there are other teams that pad their records with cupcakes.

In this case, Butler gets an easy matchup to open up the season as they will look to play "run and gun" up and down the court and turn this into a track meet, while tiring out the opposition; The Citadel in this case.

Elite Duo
Sharpshooter, Kellen Dunham (16.5 ppg., 41%-3 point range) and senior, Roosevelt Jones return as Big East- Preseason First Team Players and look to create some havoc in the Big Dance as Butler usually does.

While Dunham can shoot the lights out, Jones is a hefty 6 foot 4, 225, Charles Barkley-like player that can do it all. Last season, Jones averaged 12.7 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game and I look for these numbers to increase this season. Junior forward, Andrew Chrabascz (11.2 ppg, 3.6 rpg.) adds some width on the inside and with the loss of Cameron Woods (9.9 rpg.), the Bulldogs will need a collective team effort to defend the boards if they want to remain an elite team.

Butler went for a big man with  4 star-recruit, Nate Fowler. Fowler can hit jumper from anything inside 19 feet, rebound well, and play defense. These are definite needs for this team and Fowler will get to see some action. Expect the Butler bench to get extra minutes against a Citadel team that's not in their league.

Great Losses
For The Citadel, Brian White has some big shoes to fill as their top 3 scorers from last season are gone and while White had an outstanding freshman season, his numbers dropped to just 7.1 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. The only concern that I have in this game is "garbage time", but it won't prevent me from taking Butler with my NCAA Basketball picks as the Citadel has too many points to replace.

NJIT Highlanders (0-0) vs #2 Kentucky Wildcats (1-0) - Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Classic

One and Done Crew
You basically know what you're going to get with Kentucky as head coach, John Calipari looks to recruit players for 1 year and then it's on to the NBA if they're lucky.

Despite going 38-0 in their first 38 games last season, it didn't work out so bad as you see player such as Karl Anthony-Towns playing for the Minnesota Timberwolves as the 1st pick in the NBA Draft.

Top Freshman Center and Guard
This season, Calipari has 6 more freshman. A little less is expected from this team, but as you see, according to their ranking, the Wildcats should be a possible Final Four team or better.

Thus far this season, Kentucky got their feet wet with a 78-65 victory over Albany. Freshman, Jamal Murray, led the way with 19 points and 8 assists on 8 of 15 from the field. Last season's Kentucky team didn't have a definitive scorer due to frequent substitutions with so many freshman, but this season should be a bit different as Calipari nabbed the top center in the nation in Skal Labissiere, Jamal Murray out of Canada, and the top guard in the nation in Isaiah Briscoe out of Union, New Jersey.

Labissiere has tremendous length and is a beast on the defense end, rejecting everything in site and Briscoe, at 6 foot 3, 200 pounds, has an NBA player's body. Briscoe is a player that can shoot well from the outside and is unstoppable in the paint with his sheer strength.

Tyler Ulis
Another key player for Kentucky is guard Tyler Ulis. Ulis saw some major minutes in crucial situations last season and along with averaging 12 points and 4 rebounds per game, he knocked down some big shots. Look for Calipari to be hard on his team after their first game, committing several mistakes and this game will be a blowout with a very reasonable point spread.
