With just looking at the box scores this seems like a no-brainer when Tennessee visits Georgia Tech, for me the value is with the Volunteers to take the points with your NCAA Basketball picks.
NCAA Basketball Odds makers have come out making Georgia Tech a -4 favorite but at some places that has jumped to -6. It makes some sense considering the beat down they just put on Cornell, but Tennessee is a different monster altogether. You can get good value taking Tennessee +6 like at Bet Online sports book -110. For my NCAA Basketball Pick of the day I'm going to back Tennessee in this spot getting the points.
In their first game of the year Tennessee scored 82 points, shot 52.6% from the field, and 25% from beyond the arc against UNC Asheville. Rick Barnes has taken over the helm coming over from Texas and comes in with quite a resume, he should start to build a winning program in Tennessee. They don't have a big frontcourt but they do have a little bit of experience back that should help push the Barnes style of up-tempo. Senior forward Armani Moore started every game last season and senior guard Kevin Punter should be able to step in nicely for Josh Richardson.
Defensively Tennessee allowed 78 points, 44.6% shooting from the field, and 35.3% shooting from beyond the arc in that first contest. Barnes has never been known to bring in a lockdown type of defense but his teams always seem to be good at turning their defense into transition offense. Expect this team to get out and run as much as possible.
Georgia Tech scored 116 points, shot 60.3% from the field, and 34.8% from beyond the arc in a lopsided affair against Cornell. We should not put too much stock into that win because Cornell is arguably the worst team in the Ivy League. I like head coach Brian Gregory but things have not gone very well in his tenure at Georgia Tech in the very tough ACC. Offensively they didn't see much resistance from an overmatched Cornell team and they got double-digit scoring from seven different players. Like Tennessee they are not particularly big so it'll be interesting to see the matchup's around the perimeter. Although Georgia Tech shot lights out against Cornell don't expect that same type of production against a more athletic team in Tennessee.
Defensively Georgia Tech allowed 81 points, 46.7% shooting from the field, and 41.9% shooting from beyond the arc. It is hard to get a grasp of where they will be defensively considering this first matchup was simply an up-and-down affair. If they choose to go that same route against Tennessee and not defend the perimeter don't expect them to run away in this game.
Neither of these teams are expected to make a lot of noise in their respective leagues this season. What we have essentially is odds makers making Georgia Tech a bigger favorite than they should be because of the blowout. For one of your NCAA Basketball Picks I suggest taking the Volunteers who matchup much better with Georgia Tech to take this game to the wire, grab the points.
