Saints and Badgers in Madison on Sunday Night
The Wisconsin Badgers and Siena Saints will collide on Sunday night in a college basketball non-conference matchup. The opening tip at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wisconsin is slated for 8:00 PM ET, and the game will be aired live on ESPNU. Current NCAA Basketball Odds at TheGreek.com indicates that Wisconsin is a 14.0 point favorite, and shows a total of 140.5.
Siena accounted themselves very well during a season opening 92-74 road loss against defending national champion Duke. Now they have the daunting task of facing Wisconsin just two days later. Ironically, Siena’s first two opponents were the participants in the 2015 national championship game. That’s the first time such an occurrence has happened since the NCAA Tournament expanded to 64 teams in 1985. Siena was 7-for-15 (43.8%) with their three point shooting against Duke, and they’ll need a similar type shooting effort if they hope to upset Wisconsin. The Saints were also hurt in the Duke loss by committing 17 turnovers while forcing only 9.
The Wisconsin Badgers headed into Friday’s season opener against Western Illinois ranked 17th, and were installed as a mammoth 25.0 point favorite. Then the unthinkable transpired, and they were upset 69-67. It was the first time in 14 years that Wisconsin had lost a season opener. The most disappointing part of that defeat was their play on the defensive end of the floor. They allowed Western Illinois to shoot a blistering 54% from the field. The Badgers didn’t help themselves out offensively either by making just 35% of their shots from the floor, and going an awful 16-for-25 (64%) from the free throw line. On a positive note, Wisconsin only committed 4 turnovers and was a +7 on the boards.
Final Thoughts and Pick
This will be a very tough spot for Siena. They’ll be playing in their second true road game in three days, and doing so against two elite college basketball programs. In addition, they’ll be facing a Wisconsin team that will be in a sour mood after being victims of a monumental upset at home on Friday. By the way, Wisconsin hasn’t lost their first two games of the season since 1995, and hasn’t dropped two straight at home to begin a season since 1959. I’m going to have a very small lean towards the home favorite for one of my NCAA Basketball Picks on Sunday.
