There is late night NCAA Basketball action Sunday as this is a day for the bettor to make huge profit. Will the Cardinals rebound or will they lose a second game as they are the underdogs.
Tip-off is scheduled for 11:30 p.m. EST On Sunday, November 22nd at McKeon Pavillion in Moraga, California. According to 5 Dimes Sportsbook, the Gaels are a slight 3 point betting favorite over a Pac-12 team in the Cardinal.
The total for the game is listed at 145. This should be a very competitive game. It's very rare that you see a team that's in an elite conference such as the Pac-12 be the underdog against a team such as St.Mary's.
Even though Stanford lost the turnover battle in the 1st half to SMU, 10-2, they were playing from behind right from the start and even very good teams have difficulties in coming from behind in ball games.
Stanford let this one get away from them as they once trailed 58-38 and were never able to catch up. WIth all that said, the Cardinal must put their 1st loss of the season behind them and attempt to stay competitive in the early stages of their game tonight against St. Mary's so they don't find themselves in a similar position.
Two Allens Are Better Than One
Against SMU, it wasn't the case, but junior, Marcus Allen made his first start of the season and looked mighty impressive against the Mustangs. He poured in a team hight 18 points in just 24 minutes of play. This production is a dramatic increase from his sophomore season in which he averaged 6.4 points per game.
It remains to be seen if he can keep his play at such a high level, but for the Cardinal to be contenders, he will need to produce. Allen is an efficient shooter from the field and can rebound for a player at 6 foot 4, but isn't much of a 3-point shooter. While I don't expect 18 points every game from Marcus Allen, expect him to take more of lead role on this ball club.
Stanford is a very deep team offensively and senior, Roscoe Allen, has gotten off to a fast start this season,. The native of Budapest, Hungary is averaging 16 points and 6.3 rebound in his first 3 games this season. This is also a dramatic increase from his junior season. This big man is a very efficient shooter and is shooting 53.3% from beyond the arc. He's been very consistent thus far and has been able to keep turnovers to a minimum. This is another Cardinal that I expect major improvement from as this season is his last hurrah in a Cardinal uniform.
Stanford will also rely upon the duo of Michael Humphrey and Reid Travis to clean up the glass. Thus far, they've both done a fine job, averaging a collective 25.7 points and 15.7 rebounds per game. Look for Stanford to bounce back here as they have too many options in dealing with St.Mary's.
St. Mary's is a team that will score a lot of points, but this is their toughest test to date as Manhattan is no Stanford. The Gaels will rely on the duo of Emmet Near and double-double man, Dane Pineau.
So far this season, Near has come out like a ball of fire, averaging 21 points, 6 assist, 3 rebounds, and 2.5 steals per game. Did I mention the fact that he's a dead-eye shooter from beyond the arc, shooting 66.7% ?Near also is averaging an amazing 72.7% from the field. I know that this is in just a 2 game span, but that is quite impressive and a major improvement from what he did last season.. Look for Near to be tested against the Cardinals.
The Gaels also feature, junior, Dane Pineau, who has also upped his game thus far. Pineau is averaging 10.5 points and 10 rebounds per game. He's not going to take a ton of shots, but plays well defensively and does good work around the paint. Expect Pineau to give the Stanford offense some trouble.
I like Stanford in this matchup despite their last game as they play at a much higher level of basketball than St.Mary's. The betting spread is a bit extreme and we'll gladly take the points as a bonus with our NCAA Basketball Picks.
