Spartans-Aggies Game Preview
Here's how we break down these two teams.
San Jose State lost a couple of key guys from a team that went 9-22 last year, and was expected to struggle this season. But so far the Spartans have exceeded those expectations, already equaling last season's win total. They can't claim to have beaten anybody of any note, other than maybe Houston, but of their six losses only a couple could be called blow-outs.
SJ State's toughest foe so far has been Kansas, to whom the Spartans lost 70-57 back in November. San Jose State fell down 60-36 mid-way through the second half, then rallied to get within 62-54 with a couple minutes to go. The Spartans couldn't get any closer, but easily covered the spread as 26-point dogs.
San Jose State has won four of its last five games, after beating New Orleans 71-64 Tuesday night, despite shooting just 39 percent from the floor and missing 13 free-throws.
Utah State, meanwhile, began this season as the favorite to win the WAC, with three starters back after going 21-16 last year. And so far the Aggies have played up to those expectations. USU lost its second game of the season, at home to St. Mary's back on Nov. 15, but hasn't lost since. The Aggies also cannot claim any big-time victims, but they're winning game rather methodically; most recently, Utah State beat Seattle 75-66 Jan. 3, then rallied late to force overtime before beating Idaho 82-75 on Jan. 5.
So, Utah State is tied for first place in the WAC with Louisiana Tech at 4-0, while San Jose State sits in fourth place at 3-1.
Spartans-Aggies By the Numbers
On the season San Jose State is shooting just 40 percent from the floor, 31 percent from 3-point land and 68 percent from the FT line. At the other end of the court, though, the Spartans are holding opponents to 40 percent shooting, and out-rebounding foes by about four per game.
Utah State is shooting 49 percent from the field this season, 38 percent from long range and 69 percent from the line. The Aggies are also holding opponents to 42 percent shooting and winning the battles on the boards by about eight per game.
Spartans-Aggies Recent Rivalry
Utah State has beaten San Jose State 10 times in a row. Last year the Aggies swept the season series by scores of 82-65 and 71-61.
Spartans-Aggies Betting Trends
San Jose State is 7-5 ATS so far this season, covering six times already as underdogs.
Utah State is only 5-6 ATS, and 1-3 ATS over its last four games, all as a favorite.
Spartans-Aggies Free Pick for Friday
San Jose State has started its WAC season with a nice little run, but in the end, this team will be lucky to finish .500 in conference play. Utah State on the other hand, should be right in the thick of the fight for another WAC championship and be a more reliable sports pick.
This game is basically a wash defensively, but on offense, the Aggies simply shoot the ball better.
Pick: Take Utah State at the -9.5 points offered at Pinnacle.
