Our college basketball consultant takes a look at the Big East Semifinal game today between Providence and Villanova. We encourage you to read his informative betting preview article on this contest, since he’s gone a stellar 5-2 the last two days on conference tournament selections.

Double Revenge for Friars in Big East Tourney Semis
The Providence Friars (22-10) square off with the nation’s #4 ranked Villanova Wildcats (30-2) on Friday in the Big East Tournament Semifinals. The game will take at Madison Square Garden in New York, and the opening tip is slated for 7:00 PM ET. According to the college basketball betting odds at BetOnline, Villanova is a 9.0 point favorite, and the posted total is 144.5. Villanova went 2-0 SU&ATS versus Providence during the regular season, and both of those contests went over the total.

Providence coming off Domination Performance in Quarterfinals
The Providence Friars were awfully impressive during a 74-57 quarterfinal win over St. John’s (21-11) on Thursday. Especially considering it was a virtual home game for the Red Storm. It also marked the second consecutive game that the Friars went under the total. However, they’ve still gone over the number in eight of their last eleven overall. Providence must find away to clamp down defensively today after being torched by Villanova in their first two encounters. The Wildcats shot a sizzling 51.7% from the field and averaged 75.5 points per contest in those two games. The Friars are pretty much a lock to be in the NCAA Tournament barring something unforeseen.

Villanova rolling like a Freight Train
Villanova is coming off an absolute destruction of Marquette in the Big East Quarterfinals in an 84-49 blowout win. They’ve now won 13-games in a row since suffering a loss at Georgetown on January 19th. The Wildcats have a plethora of experienced players, and are a dynamic offensive team that’s scored 74-points or more in each of their previous seven games. Despite their terrific record, and high national ranking, in all likelihood, Villanova must win two more games in New York to secure a #1 seed for the upcoming 2015 NCAA tournament.

Final Analysis
It’s very difficult to beat a quality team like Providence three teams in the same season, although this is far from a favorable matchup for the Friars. However, I do think this game will be much closer than anticipated, and I like Providence to get inside the sizable number for one of my NCAA basketball picks on Friday.
