Just like their neighbors, the New Orleans Saints of the NFL, the Tulane Green Wave lacks effectiveness regarding defense. This has led to the Green Wave losing 12 out of 16 games this season as they're a double digit home dog tonight against the SMU Mustangs. While the Green Wave are coming off of a rare victory, asking for another win and against SMU appears to be a tall order.

SMU Mustangs (14-4) at Tulane Green Wave (4-12)

Opposite Ends of the Spectrum

While the number seems to be a bit high at 16, Tulane hasn't provided any reason to think that they can cover it as they're just 3-8-1 ATS as opposed to SMU being 9-5 ATS this season. How ironic it is that SMU is coming off of a loss and Tulane is coming off of a victory as both teams enter this game. That said, the Mustangs lost 66-64 in a heartbreaker to a nationally ranked Cincinnati team while Tulane had lost 11 out of 13 games coming into their matchup against Southern Florida. For SMU, it was exactly the opposite as they ran off 10 straight wins until their most recent game.

One facet of the game that Tulane will have to overcome is the fact that SMU's defense has been outstanding this season and a big reason for their 14-4 record. The Mustangs are allowing just 59.5 points per game. In their last 11 games, SMU has not allowed an opponent to score more than 66 points in a game and that's quite impressive.

From Tulane's perspective, they'll need junior Cameron Reynolds to have one of his better games of the season as this is a player that's quite capable of scoring as he's averaging 15.4 points and 6.2 rebounds along with being a 40% shooter from 3-point range. That said, this will still be an uphill climb for Tulane as they don't have the consistent scorers to compete against a team in SMU that relies on their defense. Tulane is averaging 70 points per game this season.

Huge Increase In Production

I'm talking about the play of Duke transfer, Semi Ojeleye as he went from a 3 point per game scorer at Duke to the leader of the Mustangs, checking in at 17.6 point, 7.4 rebounds and receiving a ton of playing time. Look for Ojeleye to play well against a vulnerable Tulane squad as the SMU defense takes care of the rest in what should be a blowout.
