The Temple Owls (5-8) face a huge test on Saturday afternoon as they host the 24th ranked team in the country in the Memphis Tigers (11-3). Memphis is coming into this game having defeated the defending National Champion, Louisville Cardinals. Odds makers are giving Temple a lot of respect as they’re just a 7.5 point betting underdog.

Tip-off is scheduled for Saturday at 3:00 p.m. EST at the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This game can be seen on ESPN 2.

Memphis looks like a pretty good deal  as they’re just a 7.5 point betting favorite on the college basketball odds board against a weak Temple Owls squad. Home court advantage is important, but Temple seems to be getting a lot of unjustified respect here.

Will Cummings Status

What’s more perplexing about this game is that Temple’s 2nd leading scorer, Will Cummings, had to leave Temple’s last game against South Florida with concussion-like symptoms. If Cummings is unable to play ,that put’s Temple in a bind as they’ll only have 7 available players and will lose Cummings’ 16.5 points, 4 assists, and 3.3 rebounds per game.

With all of that said, Temple has fared well against top 25 teams. They’ve won 3 straight and six of 7 home games against top 25 opponents. Can they overcome the loss of Cummings during a sub-par season?

The Owls will turn to senior transfer Dalton Pepper (16.7 points and 5.5 rebounds) and forward Anthony Lee (14.3 points, 9.5 rebounds). Without Cummings, Temple was helpless against the South Florida Bulls, but Lee came up huge with 22 points and 10 rebounds in Cummings’ absence. The Owls will need this type of play at home from Anthony Lee to make this a competitive ball game.

Knocking Off The Champs

Not only has Memphis defeated the Louisville Cardinals, but this is a team with a victory over Oklahoma State and a mere miss in a 2 point loss to Billy Donovan and the Florida Gators. The Tigers have had a tough schedule and managed to come out unscaved.

In the victory over the Louisville Cardinals, Memphis had to work hard to come back from a 6 point deficit with just minutes to go in the ball game as they closed out the game on an 18-6 run. Joe Jackson was pivotal in this game as he scored 11-2nd half points to propel the Tigers to the upset victory, 73-67. Memphis must not let their guard down as teams tend to do after a major upset when facing an inferior opponent such as Temple.

Joe Jackson has been the most consistent player on the Tigers squad by far. He’s scored in double-digits in 13 out of 14 games this season and appears to elevate his level of play against the superior teams. Jackson is averaging a steady 15 points, 3.7 assists, and 3.3 rebounds per game. He’s not an overwhelming offensive player, but is well balanced  player offensively and defensively and is the leader of a talented group of players.

Look for Memphis’ defense to tire out Temple’s 7 man rotation. The betting spread is very low considering the recent circumstances and both teams’ overall play for the entire season. Memphis will win and cover the point spread quite easily for our free college basketball picks.
