The Virginia Cavaliers have been one of the more dominant teams in the country since the start of conference play, as they prepare to take on the Maryland Terrapins Monday.

Let’s take a closer look at the NCAA basketball odds for this ACC matchup at John Paul Jones Arena, with the opening tip scheduled for 9:00 p.m. ET on ESPNU.

Taking care of weaker opponents

Maryland has won three of its last four games, with those victories coming against teams with a combined 33-36 record, including a 83-61 triumph over the Florida State Seminoles as 4.5-point home favorites last Saturday.

The Terrapins are 0-3 SU versus top-25 foes during the 2013-14 campaign, while they’ve dropped their last 13 on the road versus ranked opponents.

Over the last two-plus seasons, the program is 0-6 SU and 2-4 ATS as road underdogs of 9.5 to 12 points, with no clear edge in terms of the betting total (3-3 Over/Under).

Virginia has led by 19 or more points in nine of its 10 ACC wins, as it attempts to improve to 6-3 SU all-time in this series under the direction of head coach Tony Bennett.

The Cavaliers have also won 14 consecutive conference home games, which has been made possible by possessing one of the best defenses in college basketball.

College basketball handicappers will find that the team is 11-2 SU and 10-1 ATS when playing with one or less days rest.

Going to the well

The Terrapins are certainly a notch below the upper echelon teams in the conference, but they’ve got a chance of knocking off the Cavaliers if junior guard Dez Wells continues to perform at a high level away from College Park.

Wells is averaging a team-best 17.0 points in seven road games this season on 51 percent shooting.  He notched a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds in the last meeting between these two squads on March 10, 2013.

The Cavaliers are 8-0 ATS as home favorites of 9.5 to 12 points the last two-plus seasons—perhaps the most dominating sports betting trend you’ll find Monday night.

Virginia leads the ACC in scoring defense (54.3 ppg), scoring margin (+14.2) and field goal percentage defense (38.3%) during ACC play.

Monday's NCAA Basketball Picks of the Day

I’m going to recommend that readers back the Cavaliers as one of their NCAA Basketball picks, as the Terrapins are 0-6 ATS in their last six road games versus a team with a winning home record.
