Here's your best NCAA basketball pick for tonight when two teams heading in totally different directions close out the regular season: the Maryland Terrapins vs. Nebraska Cornhuskers.
#10 Maryland (25-5,13-4) vs. Nebraska (13-16, 5-12): Terps-'Huskers Betting Odds
Most books we checked with opened this game with Maryland favored by 2.5 points, the total offered at right around 121. In the early betting the spread was holding firm, while the total rose to 123.
Terps-'Huskers: The Set-Up
Maryland has won six games in a row, after beating Rutgers Tuesday 60-50. The Terps only led the Knights by three points with two minutes to go, but scored the last seven points of the game, and covered as seven-point favorites.
Just before that Maryland defeated Michigan 66-56, covering at -8; and just before that the Terps beat Wisconsin 59-53, winning that game outright as six-point home dogs.
At 25-5 overall, 13-4 in Big Ten play Maryland has locked up the two seed for this week's Big Ten Conference tournament, and will return to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2010.
On the other end of the spectrum Nebraska has lost seven games in a row, after falling at Illinois Wednesday 69-57. And that was actually one of the 'Huskers better performances as of late. Nebraska led that game by five points early in the second half, but couldn't hold on, and missed on the cover as an eight-point underdog.
In their two games prior to that the 'Huskers lost at Ohio State by 24, and at home to Iowa by 28.
At 13-16 overall, just 5-12 in Big Ten play Nebraska is one of the most disappointing teams in the country, a season after making the NCAA tournament.
Maryland won the first-ever meeting between these two programs last month in College Park 69-65. That game was tied with about five minutes to go, but the Terps used an 8-0 to take control. Maryland shot 47 percent from the floor, and made 22 of 25 free-throws, while Nebraska shot just seven free-throws total.
That game played OVER its total of 122.
By the Numbers
Maryland is shooting 44 percent from the field this season, 37 percent from 3-point land and 75 percent from the FT line. The Terps are also holding opponents to just under 40 percent FG shooting.
Nebraska is shooting just 42 percent from the floor, a miserable 29 percent from 3-point range and 71 percent from the line, while holding foes to 40 percent FG shooting.
Nebraska F Walter Pitchford, who scored 19 points and grabbed seven boards in the close loss at Maryland last month, is dealing with a sore hip and is questionable to play tonight.
Terps-'Huskers Betting Trends
Maryland is trending toward the UNDERS this season by a 14-9 margin, as Terps games have averaged 133 points.
When forming your NCAA basketball picks keep in mind that Nebraska is 13-10 on the UNDERS, as 'Huskers games have averaged 124 points.
Terps-'Huskers Free Pick
Maryland might not have a whole lot to play for Sunday, and could mail this one in, but we don't think they will, because it would be an embarrassment to lose to a sorry Nebraska outfit, and the NCAA tournament committee might not like it, regardless of the reality of the situation. So we'll take the Terps, the much better team at the short spread.
