The Akron Zips and Kent State Golden Flashes have played some close games in recent years, as they prepare to closer out their regular-season series Friday night. We look at this matchup in hopes of finding an edge for our NCAA Basketball picks.

Let’s take a closer look at the NCAA basketball odds for this Mid-American Conference showdown at Rhodes Arena, with the opening tip scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET on ESPN2.

Need to get back on track

Kent State is 1-3 SUATS over its last four games, as it dropped a 73-61 decision to the Miami OH RedHawks as six-point home favorites Tuesday, while going UNDER the betting total for a second consecutive contest.

The Golden Flashes are led by the play of guards Kris Brewer, Derek Jackson and Devareaux Manley, as the trio combine to average 35.5 points per game.

Over the last two-plus seasons, the program is 13-11 SU and 11-13 ATS off a loss against a conference rival.

Getting ready for the tournament

Akron has won and covered the number in its last two games, as it looks to secure the No. 4 seed in the upcoming MAC tournament with a victory in this spot.

The Zips have compiled a dominating 27-5 SU record in their last 32 conference home games.

College basketball handicappers will find that the team is 5-9 SU and 4-9-1 ATS versus teams with a winning record this season.

Bench play

The Golden Flashes are dangerous road underdogs on the SBR Odds page, considering their bench has averaged 34 points over their last six games.

Kent State enjoyed a 21-11 scoring advantage in that category in its three-point home win over Akron earlier this year.

Close encounters

The Zips have won seven of the last 10 overall meetings in this heated rivalry, but the last five editions have been decided by four or fewer points.

Akron will need a huge performance out of senior forward Demetrius Treadwell, who has averaged 14.5 points and 12.8 rebounds in four games against Kent State.

I’m going to recommend that readers back the Golden Flashes as one of their NCAA basketball picks, as they’ve gone 8-0 ATS as road underdogs of 6.5 to 9 points the last two-plus seasons.
