I expect Iowa State to get out and run tonight against the Colorado Buffaloes. Although odds makers have set this number pretty high I'm going to back over the total in this matchup.

NCAA odds
College Basketball oddsmakers have come out with this number at 151 for this total which seems really high especially for a first game of the year. For my NCAA pick of the day though I'm going to back over this total because this game looks like it's going to be a track meet. Right now that number has settled at Bookmaker sports book at 151 and -110.

Colorado Buffaloes
Last year Colorado average 69 points per game, shooting 43.6% from the field, and 33.5% from beyond the arc. Their numbers were okay on the offensive side of the ball but they were just so plagued by injuries they didn't have a lot of threats outside of starting guard Askia Booker. This year they also have already lost a key contributor in Xavier Johnson, but they should have enough to get out and run which is something they like to do. Head coach Tad Boyle had a rough year last year suffering quite a few injuries and ending the season below .500, for the first time under his tenure. There is a big part of this roster that is back though despite the loss of Johnson headed up by senior Josh Scott who averaged 14.5 points per game.

Defensively Colorado allowed 68.1 point per game, 42.4% shooting from the field, and 35.3% shooting from beyond the arc. They ranked in the lower part of Division I NCAA hoops in opponent field goals allowed per game which attributes to their desire to push the pace. Against Iowa State tonight I expect they will continue their style of running up-tempo against a team that also likes the run.

Iowa State
The Cyclones last year averaged 77.8 points per game, shooting 47.6% from the field, and 36.2% from beyond the arc. New head coach Prohm likes to run up-tempo and this Iowa State team is built just for that. Last year his Murray State team average 78 points per game and averaged 56.8 shots per game. Those are solid numbers for any team and I expect that trend will continue with an Iowa State team already accustomed to pushing tempo.  Georges Niang leads the list of returning scorers in which the Cyclones have four out of five back from last year's squad.

Defensively last year Iowa State allowed 69 points per game, 41.6% shooting from the field, and 34.7% shooting from beyond the arc. They also ranked in the lower part of Division I NCAA basketball at 61.2 opponent field goals attempted per game. Although Prohm has talked about shoring things up on defense, that might be a process that will take until about mid season to get worked out. As far as the beginning of the year though I expect them to get out and run as much as possible.

This has all the makings of a track meet. Iowa State won't change much as far as the pace they run, except maybe go a little bit faster, and Colorado likes to go up-tempo as well. Although this is a lot of points for the first game of the year I expect a really fun game on a neutral court. For one of your NCAA picks today I recommend taking what should be the most fast-paced game of the day and back the over.
