Iowa vs. Iowa St. (-7-) 7:30 ET ESPN2
The Iowa Hawkeyes travel to Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa for their annual December meeting against the rival Iowa St. Cyclones. Last year, Iowa St. was a 5 point road dog in Iowa City and emerged with a comfortable (90-75) win.

This year each of these teams will again vie for conference superiority in their respective leagues. To date, Iowa, behind 5th year HC McCaffrey, is 7-2 SU, 3-3 ATS. A road victory at Marquette dots the log, along with a win over a very injured Wichita St. team and a home victory vs. Florida St. But, there are also neutral court losses to Dayton and Notre Dame. This is clearly their toughest test of the year! Gone from last year’s 22-12 team who posted a 12-6 Big 10 record (tied for 3rd, won their last 6 regular season games) is “do everything,” Aaron White. Along with Center Olaseni and shooting guard Ogelsby, Iowa has holes to fill. They do return PG Gesell and a total of 4 returning starters. But, they will need to play to their full potential if they are to crack the upper echelon of the Big 10.

History & Trends
For Iowa St., there was a major question mark when the “Mayor of Ames,” Fred Hoiberg, took a post as HC of the Chicago Bulls. Former Murray St. HC, Steven Prohm, was hired to keep the magic of 20-win seasons alive for the Cyclones. To date, that has proven to be the case with a 7-0 SU, 4-2 ATS log. Note that since the (68-62) opening night victory against Colorado, Iowa St. has scored 83 or more points in every game and won every game by double digits, while averaging 90 PPG. The magic of Hilton Coliseum (where Iowa St. is 49-3 SU L3+Y), along with the chemistry that has resulted under Prohm that has allowed Iowa St. to not skip a beat, make this an outstanding spot for the Cyclones to duplicate their success against their in-state rival from last season. Four starters return from last year’s 25-win NCAA team. They have gelled immediately this season with familiar names like Monte Morris, Naz Long, George Niang and Jameel McKay leading the way. Motivated by their early round NCAA loss to UAB, look for good things from the Cyclones all season long.

While analysts continue to argue the merits of whether the ACC or Big 10 is the superior conference in the land, please note that it is the Big 12 (who in the latest highly respected Sagarin Ratings) is posting 5 Top 20 teams in Oklahoma, Kansas, Iowa St., WVU and Baylor.
